Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough

Shipwreck and Mysidia

Don’t you love a nice, long, relaxing boat ride?

Cecil is alone on a beach, with his equipped gear still in place. Head east into Mysidia. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because our opening visit here was considerably less friendly. The residents remember.

A Less-Than-Warm Welcome

Talk to the townspeople, but expect some consequences. One person turns Cecil into a toad; speaking to that person again reverses it. The pub can leave you pigged and poisoned. The Inn costs 200 Gil and will restore you.

Turning into a toad and back does NOT cure Pig. I tried. Apparently magical revenge comes with surprisingly specific terms and conditions.

Visit Namingway if you’d like, then check the shops before heading to the House of Prayer.

Those Paladin pieces are worth remembering, but no one can wear them, so don’t empty your wallet on them yet. We’ll have a reason to come back.

The House of Prayer

Head north to meet the Elder. Cecil wants to make amends, and the Elder directs him to Mt. Ordeals. Two young companions, Palom and Porom, join for the journey.

Look at the books while you’re here if you enjoy the world’s background. The shelves discuss the Crystals and magic; they aren’t a reason to buy a mountain of equipment before leaving.

Both twins start at Level 10. Put them in the back row with Cecil in front.

Palom handles black magic. Bluff improves his magic power, while Porom’s Cry can fluster enemies. Porom is our white mage and should usually be ready to heal.

Twin is a joint command. The Pyro result I recorded cost BOTH twins 10 MP, so plan around two MP reserves rather than one.

Equipment and a Little Practice

If you kept Rydia’s EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Porom can keep her Staff. Compare any spare armor you actually have with their starting EquipmentEquippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). Equippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). changes the balance of physical and magical defense; it isn’t automatically better in every situation.

You don’t need to outfit them as though they’re the final party. Nor do you need to match my grinding levels. A few nearby battles are useful for learning their commands, with the Inn conveniently close when things go poorly.

And they can go poorly. Zuu and groups of Cocatris can overwhelm the twins’ modest HP. Keep Cecil attacking, use Palom’s group magic when it will end a dangerous encounter quickly, and have Porom heal. Running away is a perfectly valid alternative to another expensive resurrection.

When you’re comfortable with the party, heal, save, and head east toward Mt. Ordeals.
