Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough
Fabul
Welcome to Yang’s home. The guards want us to see the king, but let’s look around before accepting any royal invitations. This is one of those visits where “just one more room” can turn into quite a lot of plot.
Shops and the Easily Missed Stairs
The entrance leads to 1F and its shops. Go upstairs to 2F, but don’t continue north into the Throne Room yet.
The way to the towers is easy to miss: take the stairs down at the southern side of 2F. The pale stairs blend into the stonework. They lead out to the battlements, where you can reach the west and east towers.
The weapon and armor counter offers:
| Equipment | Gil |
|---|---|
| EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Fire. | 350 |
| EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Ice. | 450 |
| EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Lightning. Effective against Mech enemies. | 550 |
| Demon helmet | 980 |
| Equipment: Body armorEquippable by Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 9; Eva −10%; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 0. | 3,000 |
| Equipment: Hand armor and ringsEquippable by Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 4; Eva −10%; Mag Def 0; Mag Eva 0. | 800 |
Cecil can use all three Demon armor pieces; the set costs 4,780 Gil. Yang already has a EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Fire., so an extra copy isn’t necessary. EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Ice. and EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Lightning. Effective against Mech enemies. give us other elemental options. Given the enemy elemental proclivities here, I used EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Fire. and EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Lightning. Effective against Mech enemies. together here. Don’t be surprised if changing claws leaves the displayed Attack unchanged.
The item shop has our familiar supplies. Stock up on Potions and ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron. items as needed; don’t forget that Edward’s Heal consumes Potions.
The Two Towers
In the west tower:
- On 1F, inspect the pot for ThorRage and open the chests for Potion, Notus, and Bomb.
- On 2F, you’ll find Namingway (yes, he moves around a LOT).
- On 3F, meet Yang’s wife.
In the east tower:
- Visit the guards on 1F.
- Check the pot in the 2F bar for Bacchus.
- On 3F, take the ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. and use the king’s bed for a free rest.
ThorRage is a single-use lightning attack. Bacchus causes Berserk, so don’t use it on someone whose commands you still want to choose.
Before visiting the king, remove any equipment from Rosa that you want to retain access to, especially her EquipmentGloves. Def 0; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 2%. Protects against Pig. Equippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight).. She won’t be part of the coming defense. Leave Rydia equipped for now.
Defending Fabul
Once you’re rested and supplied, return to 2F and enter the Throne Room. Agreeing to help leads into a sequence of battles with Cecil, Yang, and Edward. Keep Cecil and Yang in front and Edward in back.
You won’t be shopping between these fights:
| Fight | Formation |
|---|---|
| 1 | Captain and two Fighters |
| 2 | Weeper, Imp Captain, and WaterHag |
| 3 | Captain and two Fighters |
| 4 | Gargoyle |
| 5 | Weeper, Imp Captain, and WaterHag |
| 6 | Captain and two Fighters |
Target the Captain first if you want his rewards. Killing his companions first gives him a chance to retreat. For the mixed groups, let Cecil and Yang do most of the attacking while Edward helps with healing or singing.
Watch HP throughout the sequence. Edward disappearing at critical health is not a great substitute for having a healer.
The confrontation after these ordinary battles is scripted. You aren’t expected to win Cecil’s duel with the Dragoon, and the “Annihilated” message isn’t a reason to reload. Let the scenes continue.
Pick Up the Pieces—and the Treasure
After regaining control, search the Throne Room. The pot on the left contains Hermes. On the far right is a switch that opens a door at the top of the room.
Through that opening, follow the hidden passage up, right, down, then right into the treasure room. The three chests contain, from top to bottom:
- Silk Web
- Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 2; Eva +24%; Mag Def 0; Mag Eva 1%.
- Ether1
Equip the Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 2; Eva +24%; Mag Def 0; Mag Eva 1%. on Cecil. In addition to changing your def, it adds two Evasion.
Visit the infirmary and talk to the survivors. Yang’s wife reports that she gave the attackers “one helluva beatin’” with her frying pan. I have some questions about why she wasn’t in our defense party.
The guards won’t let you leave yet. Follow the king’s advice and visit the Inn. After the scenes, you’ll receive Death. Thankfully, that’s a good sword upgrade for Cecile, not a diagnosis.
Before Boarding the Ship
We’re about to lose access to some party members’ equipment. Before heading to the harbor, remove anything you want to keep from Rydia, Yang, and Edward. Keep Cecil properly equipped.
If your inventory is cramped, make a Chocobo Forest trip and store spare equipment. Keep unique weapons and useful casting items rather than selling them just to avoid the trip. Save before boarding.
The harbor is east of Fabul. Speak to the people there and let the voyage play out. Continue with Shipwreck and Mysidia.
