Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough

Mt. Hobs

Now that we’re able to do something about that ice, take the hovercraft back toward Damcyan, then head east to Mt. Hobs-West. Save before entering, and make sure everyone is healthy. Edward in particular has a remarkable ability to find the wrong end of an attack.

Melt the Ice, Then Take the Left Door

Approach the ice for a scene with Rydia. She learns MagicA 5-MP Black Magic spell on Tellah's starting list that Rydia learns while melting the ice at Mt. Hobs-West., which costs 5 MP, and clears the path.

If you like using R1 to switch which character is your avatar as you walk around, be aware that scenes like this one are prone to changing that back to Cecil. You’re not stuck with that choice, just use R1 to change it back.

Continue uphill until the path offers two doors. Visit the western door first. This little side area has a save point and four chests. From left to right, they contain ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing., Potion, Soft, and 960 Gil. Save your game, then use a ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. if you need to recover. When you’re ready to continue, return to Mt. Hobs-West and take the eastern door to the Summit.

Use arrows against Cocatris and Gargoyle, Fire against Skeleton and Red Bone, and EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. against Turtle. Don’t include Spirit in a group Fire cast; use EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. or physical attacks instead. Keep Soft handy for petrification, and heal promptly after Gargoyle’s Wind. Focus attacks on the Bombs rather than leaving several wounded enemies alive to Detonate.

Rosa’s Pray restores some party HP without spending MP, but “Prayer unanswered” means exactly what it sounds like. Use a dependable cure when someone’s life depends on it. Edward’s Heal spends a Potion, so it isn’t free either.

I had success targeting GrayBombs before the ordinary Bombs, with Hold and Edward’s singing helping control the fight. That’s a useful approach, but sometimes you’re just going to have to recover from Detonate.

On the Summit, open the chest for ten EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 10. Attack element: Holy. Effective against Ghoul, Undead enemies. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair.. Heal before continuing up the stairs. There isn’t much point saving a Potion if its owner doesn’t survive the next fight.

Boss Fight Prep

You’ll see a monk fighting three Imp Captains. Once the party joins him, the real fight begins.

Have Cecil attack and Rydia use MagicRydia's 7-MP Call spell, available by Level 3. The attack is ChocKick.. Rosa should keep the party healthy; Edward can help heal or hide if he’s in danger.

Pay attention when the game warns that the monster is going to explode. That’s your cue to use Hide or Parry, rather than squeeze in one more attack. In my battle the blast dealt 64–82 damage to everyone and left three GrayBombs and three Bombs behind. YMMV.

After the blast, recover promptly and concentrate your attacks. Don’t assume the dangerous part ended with the large explosion.

Rosa learned Cure2 after this fight in my run. It costs 9 MP and is welcome help for the descent, but don’t build your boss plan around having it beforehand. Check her actual spell list.

Meet Yang

Yang joins as a High Monk. Put him in the other front-row position beside Cecil, leaving Rosa, Rydia, and Edward in back.

He starts with a EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Yang. Power 0; Acc 80%. Attack element: Fire. and EquipmentEquippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 2; Eva 0; Mag Def 1; Mag Eva 1%.. Removing the claw doesn’t necessarily lower the displayed Attack number: that number isn’t telling you everything about the weapon’s effect. He can equip claws in either hand.

Yang has no magic menu to manage. Kick attacks the enemy group, Power raises his attack power, and Bear raises his defense. For ordinary encounters, a straightforward attack is usually sufficient.

Down the Other Side

Continue through the summit exit to Mt. Hobs-East and descend to the world map. I found no treasure on this side during the recorded route. Keep healing between battles rather than treating the descent as a victory lap.

Head east toward Fabul. There’s also a Chocobo Forest farther east if you’d like to visit before entering the castle. Save outside Fabul, then continue with Fabul.
