Final Fantasy IV PS1 Character Guide

Porom: Abilities and Level Progression

Porom joins in Mysidia at Level 10 with 110 HP and 50 MP. Keep her in the back row and her staff in her right hand. Palom gets the flashy spells; Porom gets the job that lets everyone survive long enough to use them.

Don’t spend her last useful healing turn chasing a little extra damage. Cure2 at 13 is the early milestone I’d watch for.

The learning chart still has gaps; an omitted level does not mean she learns nothing there.

Commands Worth Knowing

Her ordinary list is Fight, White, Twin, Cry, Item. Cry produced “Flustered the enemy” against Zuu, but that message alone doesn’t establish an exact stat reduction or guaranteed escape. For urgent survival, use the healing or protection whose result you can rely on.

Twin: Budget for Both Casters

Twin’s Pyro result hits the enemy group and costs 10 MP from EACH twin, not 10 MP between them. In the controlled example, both went from 50 MP to 40 MP.

Keep both available and healthy if you intend to use it. Sometimes the better choice is to let Palom handle offense while Porom heals. Don’t give up the healer’s action just because a combined attack sounds impressive. Don’t assume every Twin use will produce Pyro.

Base Stats by Level

These are base primary stats, with equipment bonuses removed. HP and MP are the recorded maxima from this run, not guaranteed rolls. A dash means the base value is not established; missing levels are not interpolated. Attack, Defense and their multipliers are separate derived combat values.

Equipment Modifiers

Equipment bonuses are fixed; they do not increase with your level. Add these primary-stat modifiers to the base values above. Defense and evasion belong to the equipment/combat calculation, not the five primary stats. This is the relevant equipment selection, not an exhaustive catalog.

With Staff/Feather/Leather/EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 2; Eva 0; Mag Def 2; Mag Eva 1%.: Attack 2 × 8, Accuracy 47%, Defense 0 × 9, Evasion 26%, Mag Def 0 × 6, Mag Eva 8%. Fully unequipped: Attack 2 × 4, Accuracy 52%, Defense 0 × 3, Evasion 30%, Mag Def 0 × 0, Mag Eva 3%, with primary stats unchanged.

Starting EXP 1,957 and Next 735 put Level 11 at 2,692 total EXP. Palom shares that starting threshold, but a KO can separate their later progress.

Magus or Tiara?

On the Mysidia return, Cure replaces Staff, with Magus, EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Palom, Porom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 3; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 3%. Protects against Petrify. and Silver providing the armor upgrade. Cure raises Attack power 12→16 and Accuracy 50%→55% in the Level 21 comparison.

The hidden Tiara in Mist improves defense and magic protection over Magus, but has a Will tradeoff:

Headgear at Level 21DefenseEvasionMag DefMag EvaWisWill
Magus1 × 1527%1 × 1217%1529
Tiara1 × 1930%1 × 1722%2226

Both rows keep Cure, EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Palom, Porom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 3; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 3%. Protects against Petrify. and Silver fixed. Choose the protection you want; do not interpret Will 29→26 as a level-up loss.

The base-stat table above already removes these equipment bonuses. Changing outfits does not start a new growth track.

Before the Castle Baron throne-room sequence, you can return the valuable Tiara to inventory by equipping a spare Magus. That deliberately lowers the defensive numbers for retention; it isn’t another upgrade.
