Enemies and Battle Strategy

This PS1 release has no in-game Bestiary. Use this page when you need a quick answer to “what works on that thing?” It covers the enemies and strategies documented so far, not every possible formation or drop in the game. Later sections contain boss spoilers.

Enemy HP is a fixed reference value where listed. Damage is not: level, equipment, defense, targeting, and randomness all affect the result. An attack that finishes one enemy may be much less effective when spread across a group.

How Exp is distributed

The reward screen shows the share for each eligible character, not the formation’s entire EXP pool:

displayed Exp = floor(formation Exp pool ÷ eligible characters)

KO’d and petrified characters do not receive a share. A formation can therefore show different EXP with different survivors, without having changed its underlying reward. Enemies that escape do not contribute their normal defeat reward.

Baron plains

FloatEye942
Imp528
SwordRat1366
Eagle540

Cecil and Kain can handle the opening groups with ordinary attacks. Keep an eye on HP between fights rather than assuming a small enemy means a harmless ambush.

Mist Cave

SandMoth and Larva join the early encounters here. Keep enough HP for the boss rather than spending every recovery item on optional fights.

For Mist D., stop attacking during its mist form. The counter is the danger, not a reason to attack faster. Resume when it becomes solid again.

After Mist, toward Kaipo

SandMan, Sandpede, SandWorm, and FloatEye appear around this stretch. TinyMage can also appear in the broader region; don’t treat a short list as a guarantee that nothing else can turn up.

SandMan1770
Sandpede2079
SandWorm2282

Protect newly joined Rydia. Her early HP is low enough that putting her in the back row and healing promptly matters more than chasing one particular level.

Kaipo forced battle

The nighttime soldiers are a story encounter, not a random town battle. Keep Cecil healthy before resting. Do not use the ordinary WaterHag statistics for the later Edward-only event.

Water Cavern-South encounters

EnemyGilEXP poolPractical approach
Pike30119Bolt works well, including against groups.
Zombie31112Use Fire. Cecil’s dark weapon is a poor choice here; spreading Cure across a group is not a reliable substitute for Fire.
EvilShel28101Clear these while controlling the rest of the formation.
WaterBug79225Prefer Cecil’s physical attack with the Dark sword. Bolt can trigger Arise and recovery, undermining the apparent elemental advantage.
CaveToad2489Rydia’s reusable EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. attack saves MP.
MadToad34127Be ready to cure Toad; do not assume killing its companions prevents it.
Jelly36134Fire. Physical attacks can do only 1 damage.
Gator95236Keep healing available while finishing the group.

WaterBug can retreat; its reward is then lost. CaveToads can drop MaidKiss, useful when the frogs return the favor. A ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. can cure Toad outside battle.

Using items against undead

Healing items can damage undead, but a Potion is not an efficient replacement for proper offensive magic here. Save your supplies for keeping the party alive.

Waterfall boss: Octomamm

Use Bolt and Cecil’s Dark sword, with Tellah ready to heal. The tentacles disappear as the fight progresses and the boss weakens. Arrive healed rather than trying to make those first turns recovery turns.

Damcyan approach

TinyMage resists the simple “use Imp on everything” plan. Keep physical attackers working on it and don’t confuse poor damage from one summon with a universal immunity.

Antlion Cave

EnemyGilEXP poolPractical approach
Imp Cap.48184Cecil can focus it while the others handle companions.
Turtle46234EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. or Ice magic.
Basilisk30110Focus physical attacks.
Weeper42156Physical attacks; Edward’s Lamia can confuse it.
Cream33144Bolt against the group. Physical attacks are a poor use of turns.
SandWorm2282Ordinary attacks are usually sufficient.

For Turtle/Basilisk/Weeper groups, give Cecil the Basilisk, Rydia the Turtle, and Edward the Weeper. Leave a confused enemy alone while dealing with the active threats. Edward’s Heal consumes a Potion; it is not free healing.

Antlion boss target

MagicRydia's 7-MP Call spell, available by Level 3. The attack is ChocKick. gives Rydia a useful way to attack without provoking the counter seen after ordinary strikes. Cecil can keep attacking if you can absorb the retaliation. Don’t assume every nonphysical command is safe: Song of Charm also provoked a counter.

Keep Edward healed or Hide him when necessary. The SandRuby is the story reward after the fight, not an ordinary random drop.

Kaipo WaterHag plot battle

Edward fights alone. Keep attacking and let the scripted conversation unfold. This WaterHag is a special plot encounter; ordinary enemy HP figures are misleading here. Victory awards 100 Gil and 800 Exp.

Mt. Hobs encounters

EnemyGilEXP poolPractical approach
Cocatris82275Fire and arrows work. Confusion can turn its own dangerous abilities against it.
Skeleton126238Fire or single-target healing magic. Don’t leave a survivor unattended; it can cast MagicA spell Rydia learns upon reaching Level 5; its list, icon, and MP cost remain to be captured..
Bomb76361Finish it before Detonate becomes a problem.
GrayBomb105445Prioritize these in mixed bomb groups; Hold can help buy time.
Gargoyle90315Wind can leave someone at critical HP. Have dependable healing ready.
Spirit122None identified.Protect the fragile party members and finish the fight promptly.

Killing GrayBombs first while using control magic is a useful plan, not a guarantee that kill order alone prevents Detonate. Heal between battles. Pray is convenient when damage is light, but it can fail.

Mt. Hobs boss

When Mom Bomb warns that it is going to explode, prepare for party-wide damage. Heal before the blast; defensive commands and Edward’s Hide are options when there is time to act. The explosion is not the end: three Bombs and three GrayBombs follow. Be ready to finish the new group instead of celebrating early.

Fabul defense encounters

In the Captain-led soldier group, focus the Captain first if you want to defeat the entire formation before it retreats. Expect repeated battles, and use the pauses to reassess HP.

The later Dragoon confrontation is a scripted story setback. It is not a signal that you should reload and spend hours grinding.

Mysidia-region encounters

The newly joined twins need protection. Cocatris is dangerous to a fragile back row, and TinyMage can drain MP with Psych. Other groups include Zuu, Needler, SwordRat, Imp, and Imp Cap.

Twin spends 10 MP from each twin. It can clear groups, but compare its cost and casting delay with Palom’s ordinary spells. Keep Porom available for healing when a back attack makes the formation messy.

Mt. Ordeals

MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 15 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. is useful against the undead groups. Cecil’s dark weapon is a poor answer to Skeletons and Ghouls, so let the casters do the work and use his turns for items or protection when necessary. Don’t judge a new spell solely by group-target damage.

Outside Mythril Village

Cannibal has 440 HP; Treant has 335 HP. Fire is useful against these groups. You don’t need the most expensive spell available just because Tellah knows it; preserve MP for recovery and the next route.

Troia forest: Panther and StingRat

StingRat: avoid feeding the Needle counter

StingRat has 398 HP and punishes repeated chip damage with Needle. Finish other enemies, then use a sufficiently strong attack on the rats instead of repeatedly weakening the entire formation.

Fire3-all cleared the tested group; weaker spread-out Fire spells did not reliably do so. Your caster’s stats matter, so watch the result rather than treating the spell name as a guaranteed one-shot. For a smaller group, weigh the MP cost against focused attacks.

Magnetic Cavern

Check the nonmetal equipment plan before entering. A character who cannot act may be wearing metal, not suffering from an enemy status effect.

Cecil can automatically protect a critically injured ally from physical attacks. That can concentrate damage on him, so heal the ally instead of letting Cover become an accidental way to exhaust Cecil.

Tower of Zot: 3F and 4F enemy reference

These statistics cover the regular enemies on 3F and 4F, not every floor of Zot. EXP is the enemy’s undivided pool. PS1 3F reference, PS1 4F reference.

EnemyFloorsHPAtkDef / MDefGil / EXP poolPractical approach
Ice Liz3, 4480622 / 14289 / 1331Fire; avoid Ice.
Slime310552254 / 1250 / 750Fire magic; very high physical defense.
SwordMan3360642 / 19175 / 840Fire or Holy; not AbilityCecil's starting ability; its menu description says it sacrifices some of his HP to damage all enemies..
Marion3, 4473563 / 17195 / 1000Focus physical attacks; no listed elemental weakness.
Puppet3, 4256563 / 16180 / 800Fire.
Cream35516254 / 1233 / 144Bolt rather than ordinary physical attacks.
Jelly33515254 / 736 / 134Fire rather than ordinary physical attacks.
EpeeGirl3, 4425603 / 15200 / 1050Focus physical attacks; no listed elemental weakness.
IceBeast3, 4520643 / 13276 / 1441Fire; avoid Ice.
Witch3, 4350502 / 12329 / 1551Focus physical attacks; no listed elemental weakness.
Gremlin4410563 / 15275 / 1221Fire.

5F left-route boss preparation

Use the right-hand save room before taking the left route to the Magus Sisters. Focus Cindy first with physical attacks while respecting Wall; don’t send ordinary attack magic into a reflected target. Let Tellah heal as needed, then finish the remaining sisters.

Heal afterward, before the next story trigger. If you are transferring Tellah’s equipment, do it after this battle rather than weakening him beforehand.

Valvalis

Kain’s AbilityKain leaves the battlefield, then lands on his target to attack. While airborne he also misses party healing; wait for recovery before jumping if his HP is low. interrupts the spinning defense. Keep him available for that job and keep the party healed; Wind and petrification can make an otherwise stable fight unravel quickly.

Sylvan Cave: control before damage

Read the Sylvan Cave route before starting the treasure circuit. Reapply Float to the entire party on every new screen.

Use Toad early on Ghosts and Malboros, then finish transformed enemies physically. Don’t cast it again on enemies already transformed: it can turn them back. A back attack can still let Breath land before your spell, so keep a second character ready with recovery items.

EnemyHP / AtkDef / MDefGil / EXP poolPractical approach
Ghost2800 /1003 /23362 /3141Toad, then physical attacks. Absorbs Fire; no Fire-all while one remains. Source lists Sleep immunity.
DarkTree3900 /1043 /38525 /5041Toad does not work. Options include Mute, Rosa’s Mute-arrow Aim, and single-target Fire. Focus these while transformed enemies are less threatening.
Malboro4200 /1123 /23458 /5641Toad early; keep a second character available for recovery if Breath lands first. Piggy/Mini are not interchangeable alternatives: the PS1 source lists immunity to those.

These are PS1 reference values. The cave also contains ToadLady, TinyToad, and Centpede; the table highlights three priority threats, not the complete roster.

For mixed Ghost/DarkTree groups, transform the Ghosts and focus the still-active trees. Use Fire on a tree alone, not across a group containing a Fire-absorbing Ghost. Mute or Equipment: ArrowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 35. Attacks may inflict Silence. Effective against Mage enemies. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. can help control DarkTree. Don’t assume Toad, Piggy, and Mini are interchangeable.

Lunar Path: Toad as a practical control spell

Toad can transform Puddings, Procyotes, and Red Worms. A failed cast doesn’t by itself prove immunity. Once transformed, finish the targets physically, but keep healing available: Red Worms can still use Vampire as frogs.

Use dependable healing when someone is in danger instead of waiting for Pray to succeed. Control magic takes a turn to resolve, and a low-HP caster can be knocked out before completing it.

CPU: the Attacker is dangerously easy to kill

The upper orb, Attacker, has only 3,000 HP. CPU has 30,000. Kill the lower Defender first, CPU second, and Attacker last. Killing both small orbs while CPU remains provokes lethal retaliation and restores them. Dev’s Chronicles guide, PS1 Core reference.

Avoid Bahamut, Leviatan, Quake, and other all-enemy offense while CPU is alive. Keep control of physical attackers rather than using MagicWhite Magic confirmed in Porom's Level 18 menu, costing 18 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run.. CPU uses Wall, so ordinary targeted attack magic isn’t a safe alternative. Let Rosa heal, and only clear the surviving orb after CPU is gone.

Odin: lightning and decisive offense

Use strong lightning offense, such as Rydia’s MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 30 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. and Edge’s Blitz, while Cecil attacks and Kain AbilityKain leaves the battlefield, then lands on his target to attack. While airborne he also misses party healing; wait for recovery before jumping if his HP is low.. Rosa can use Bolt arrows when healing isn’t needed. End the fight promptly rather than waiting to see the threatened attack; Odin can also make ordinary attacks before it.

B5 Crystal shield: Red D. and Blue D.

Focus Red D. first with single-target MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 30 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run.. Do not spread Ice across both targets: Blue D. absorbs it. Flare is non-elemental, not a stronger Fire spell. Use Flare against Blue D., and avoid Fire and Holy as well. PS1 Blue D. reference

Keep Rosa ready to heal. ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron. revives with low HP, so follow it with healing; MagicWhite Magic costing 52 MP, seen in Tellah's post-trial menu and learned by Rosa at Level 45. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. is preferable when available. The shield reward can go on Cecil, not Kain.

Warlock: SomaDrop is a drop, not its steal

Edge steals MaidKiss from Warlock. SomaDrop is a rare victory drop, not something to keep attempting to steal. It raises maximum MP by 10 without refilling current MP. PS1 Warlock reference

Farming is optional. Don’t prolong every Warlock battle on the assumption that another Steal attempt will eventually produce SomaDrop.
