Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough

Antlion Cave

Land the hovercraft and enter Antlion B1F. We’re here for the Sand Ruby, but we might as well collect everything else while we’re at it.

Keep Cecil in front and Rydia and Edward in back. Edward is still rather delicate. He can Hide when things get dangerous, but it’s helpful to ask him to contribute occasionally between disappearing acts.

B1F: Six Chests

Clear B1F before taking the southern stairs
StepAction
1Open the chest immediately left of the entrance for Potion.
2Continue left for Silk Web.
3Work down the western side into the southwest corner for ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. and another Potion.
4Cross to the northeast. The far-northeast chest contains Soft, and the adjacent middle-level chest has the third Potion.
5With all six collected, take the bottom-right exit to B2F.

Have Rydia use EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. through Item against Turtle and MagicA spell Rydia learns upon reaching Level 5; its list, icon, and MP cost remain to be captured. against Cream. Cecil’s normal attacks handle Basilisk and Weeper; ordinary attacks also suffice for the smaller enemies. Once Edward gets Lamia, his attacks may Confuse an enemy.

For Turtle, Basilisk, and Weeper together, I liked Cecil attacking Basilisk, Rydia using EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. on Turtle, and Edward attacking Weeper. It gives everyone a job, and confusing the Weeper can buy you a little breathing room.

If Edward Hides, his command changes to Show. Parry lets him remain hidden. He may also hide automatically at critical HP, so heal him if you’d like him back at work.

B2F: A Better Harp and a Hidden Route

Clear B2F and its save-room branch
StepAction
1Explore the southwest branch. Open the lower-right chest for Notus, then go into the room just west of it for Lamia.
2Equip Lamia on Edward. It’ll raise his Attack from 10 to 20, and its attacks can inflict Confuse.
3Immediately south and just left of that room’s door is a secret passage. Follow it south, all the way west, then north to emerge near the western stairs.
4Continue north for Silk Web, then east for HrGlass1.
5Take the stairs just south of HrGlass1 up to the separate Antlion B1F section. Go left through the door into the save room.
6Open its east chest for ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron., north chest for Ether1, and west chest for Exit. Rest and save on the central seal.

Edward’s Heal is worth trying when everyone needs a little recovery. It uses no MP and trades one potion for restoring around 16 HP per character.

If only one person needs healing, an ordinary Potion is more controllable. Sing can also inflict status effects, but don’t rely on it producing exactly the result you want.

Antlion’s Nest

Return to B2F and take the lowest southern exit. Antlion’s Nest is a ring of five levels connected by stairs. The doesn’t appear to be anything around the outside, so work your way down.

Heal before the final stairway. Reaching the bottom begins the scene, and Edward explains how harmless Antlions are. I don’t know about you, but I sure feel better having heard that they… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Boss Fight Prep

Keep everyone healthy, particularly the two back-row characters. You did use the save-room seal before coming down here, right?

Antlion has 1,100 HP in the checked PS1 references. Rydia’s ChocKick did 160–225 damage in my fight without provoking a counter. Cecil’s attacks did provoke counters, but he could withstand them.

Edward’s Song of Charm also drew a counter, so don’t assume singing is a free pass. Keep him safe and let the others handle most of the damage. Once you’ve won, you’ll be rewarded with the SandRuby.

Getting Back Out

Walk back or use the Exit item from the save-room branch. Rydia’s Warp costs 4 MP and unwinds the route one transition at a time. Repeated casts eventually got me outside, but they also used every last bit of her MP. You can use another ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. to use outside, but if you’re really close to the hovercraft, just hop in and head back toward Damcyan. Its recovery pots are useful if the trip has left you depleted. Next: Return to Kaipo.
