Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough

Baron Region and Mist Cave

Before heading off on our assignment, let’s visit Baron. The town is right around the castle, but the entrance is surprisingly easy to miss: walk left or right from the outdoor castle approach instead of going straight back through the castle gates. (Yes, I managed to miss the entire first town the first time I played this game.)

A Few Things to Pick Up

Collect the first-visit Baron town items
StepAction
1Go right past the Inn and check the standing jar for a Potion.
2Inside the Inn, check the jar left of the entrance for another Potion. Go all the way right and up, then examine the swords on the wall. The hidden room has EagleEye, ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing., and Eyedrops.
3In the house directly north of the Inn, examine the left side of the bookshelf for ItemAn item found in the middle chest of Baron Castle's opening treasure room. and the far-left pot for MaidKiss. Outside, the lower pot in the group of four holds another Potion.
4Go up the stairs left of Devil’s Road to visit Cid’s house. You can read the books, though I didn’t find anything else there.
5From behind the Inn, go north across the bridge, then up the right side past the dancing girl. Take the stairs into the water and follow the channel south under the bridges to the small pond. Explore the pond to find hidden treasure boxes containing an Hourglass and another ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing..
6Return north and cross the upper bridge to the right. Go through the doorway and past the woman who mentions the old waterway. Walk through the hidden opening in the trees, then go up, left, and down into the deep grass for more hidden treasure: two Softs and a ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron..

Your haul should be three Potions, an ItemAn item found in the middle chest of Baron Castle's opening treasure room., two Softs, a ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron., two ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing., EagleEye, Eyedrops, Hourglass, and MaidKiss. Not bad for a town we could have walked right past.

Shops, Explanations, and Namingway

The Inn costs 50 Gil. The weapon and armor shops are locked, so save your equipment money for later. The item shop is left of the entrance:

ItemGil
Potion30
ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron.100
Soft400
MaidKiss60
Eyedrops30
Antidote40
ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing.100
Gysahl50

There aren’t a lot of things you NEED to buy at this point. Cecil and Kain should be pretty well suited for their upcoming battle.

Devil’s Road is the little building down and left from the locked shops. The road itself is sealed, but its downstairs Training Room has useful explanations of rows, Parry, changing equipment in battle, multi-target magic, storage, saving, and of course, holding L1 + R1 to escape from battle.

Namingway can change your characters’ names for free. There’s no reward for doing it, so feel free to keep the defaults. I tried renaming Kain and changing him back; my Gil stayed right where it was. At least someone around here isn’t charging for everything.

Optional: Chocobo Forest

Travel far west and a little south from Baron to find Chocobo Forest. This is a handy detour if you’d like a ride without fighting something every few steps.

Use Chocobo Forest
StepAction
1Search the tall grass for a hidden chest containing Gysahl.
2Catch a white Chocobo if you need MP restored. Cecil and Kain can’t cast, though.
3Catch a yellow Chocobo to ride on the world map. You travel faster and avoid random encounters.
4The yellow Chocobo can cross shallow inland water such as rivers and lakes, but not the ocean. Press X when you want to dismount.

If you examine the green patch at the top of the forest and use Gysahl, you can summon Fat Chocobo. You don’t need this yet, but you’ll want to know it’s there before to long. Fat Choco is the game’s answer to having limited storage space in your party’s inventory. By using a Gysahl to summon him, you can feed him to store things and ask him to barf up things you’ve previously fed him. Yeah, that’s probably the grossest bank I’ve ever heard of, too. Feed will deposit an entire stack of one item. Also, some important items (including the BombRing) are greyed out and can’t be deposited.

Mist Cave

Head to the far northwest of the accessible region to reach Mist Cave.

Collect every Mist Cave chest
StepAction
1From the entrance, go all the way right, climb the first stairway, and continue all the way left. Descend one stairway, climb the next, and continue upward.
2Keep going after the warning voice and open the chest for a Potion.
3Go right across the bridge, then up to collect Eyedrops.
4Backtrack and descend the nearby stairways. Go left and up for a ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing..
5Return down and go all the way right for a second Potion.
6Continue upward until the voice asks whether you’ll go on. Stop here to heal. Yes starts the boss fight; No lets you back away before continuing on.

Normal attacks will get you through the ordinary encounters. Heal between fights as needed.

Boss Fight Prep

Heal both characters before answering Yes. This fight is mostly about knowing when NOT to attack.

If you attack the mist, you’ll miss and provoke ColdMist. Don’t queue more attacks just because a character’s turn is ready. Let the cloud be a cloud for a while.

Most of the PS1 references I checked give Mist D. 465 HP, but others disagree. My damage logs rule out 450 without distinguishing 465 from 475. Either way, watching the transformation matters more than counting down its last few HP.

On to Mist

Leave through the northern exit, recover outside if needed, and head east toward Mist. Sand Man, Sandpede, SandWorm, and FloatEye can appear along this stretch. Save before entering town, and read the note below.

Quick note: This game continually swaps party members on you. Since you have no way of knowing when that’s going to happen, I’ll at least tell you when to unequip folks if there is equipment that can be applied to new party members.

With that in mind: As soon as you enter the town, remove Kain’s Spear and Iron gear immediately before entering Mist if you want to keep it available through the upcoming party change.

Continue with Mist Aftermath and Kaipo.
