Items and Equipment
A bigger Attack or Defense number is useful, but it isn’t the whole story. Elements, status protection, accuracy, and primary-stat bonuses can make the supposedly weaker item the better choice. This page collects the practical comparisons and shopping stops; the character pages separate base growth from equipment modifiers.
Later sections contain equipment and location spoilers. Use the section for the area you’re exploring.
For the complete type-by-type list of weapon power, armor defenses, fixed stat modifiers, special effects and who can equip each piece, open the Equipment Reference.
Handedness and bow-arrow alignment
For right-handed Rosa, equip arrows in RHnd and the bow in LHnd. Reversing them is allowed, but lowers her displayed Attack. If a slot refuses the new item, remove both hand items first: an incompatible weapon in the other hand can prevent equipping the bow-and-arrow pair.
Aim consumes an arrow. Check the equipped stack before blaming a sudden Attack change on a level-up. The hand-placement difference is not a universal percentage bonus to battle damage.
Reusable weapons and useful consumables
| Item | Why you might keep it |
|---|---|
| EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. | Select Item, move up to the equipped weapon, and use it for Ice damage without spending MP. Especially handy against Turtles and CaveToads. |

Reusable Item attack with no MP cost. | Another reusable, no-MP attack through the equipped Item slot. Useful for Palom and Rydia; its item effect is not the same as its displayed physical Attack. |
| Imp | Use the dropped item to teach Rydia the 1-MP Imp summon. The item is consumed. |
| Bacchus | Applies Berserk. Save it for a fight where losing command control is acceptable. |
| ThorRage | A consumable MagicA spell Rydia learns upon reaching Level 5; its list, icon, and MP cost remain to be captured. attack against the enemy group. |
| Notus | A consumable MagicA spell Rydia learns on her first level-up after joining, announced beside an ice icon. attack. |
| Cross | Removes Curse. |
| Smut | A one-use visual joke, not required dungeon equipment. Find it in the developers’ Nap Room bookshelf in Dwarven Castle. Keep it as a souvenir or use it for the gag. |
Resting: Tent versus Cabin
A ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. restores up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP per character. Early on that can look like full recovery; later it definitely isn’t. A Cabin restores full HP/MP. Use either on the world map or at a save field, then check the menu and save separately. ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing. can also cure Toad.
Inventory space and sorting
Use Sort from the main Item menu to combine partial stacks. The vendor sell menu does not provide the same consolidation. Arrow stacks can exceed the shop’s purchase batches; don’t assume two separately purchased stacks need two permanent slots.
To free a slot, use, sell, or discard the whole stack, not one item from it. Cheap, replaceable status items are usually better emergency discards than ItemAn item found in the middle chest of Baron Castle's opening treasure room., ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron., camping supplies, unique equipment, or reusable weapons. Eyedrops cost 30 Gil and MaidKiss 60 Gil at the early shops, but there is no shop inside the dungeon to replace them immediately.
Fat Chocobo storage
Fat Chocobo stores surplus equipment and item stacks. Feed deposits; Barf retrieves. Near Baron, look for the forest southwest of town and the distinctive grass patch toward its top; Gysahl summons him at the appropriate spot.
Deposit gear you won’t use on the next trip, not the recovery supplies you might need before reaching another storage point. Keep alternative elemental weapons when the next dungeon calls for them. WeaponEquippable by Cecil (Paladin). Power 40; Acc 99%; Will +3. Attack element: Holy. Keep for the forging quest; it cannot be stored with Fat Chocobo. cannot be stored, and key items such as BombRing are not ordinary disposable clutter.
Dwarven Castle also has storage in its basement. At the red-carpeted area, check north between the pots and use Gysahl. The Lunar Whale has its own Fat Chocobo farther south than the sleeping compartment.
Opening equipment
Cecil begins with the Shadow set; Kain has Spear and Iron equipment. Rydia joins with Rod, Leather headgear and body armor, and EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 2; Eva 0; Mag Def 2; Mag Eva 1%.. You don’t need to buy duplicate Leather equipment for her in Kaipo.

Def 1; Eva +20%; Mag Def 0; Mag Eva 0. 50, Equipment: HeadgearEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Cid. Whether to sell or retain spare gear depends on when you’ll use it again, not on preserving the exact inventory of this walkthrough.

Remove metal from every equipment slot, not merely the weapon. Paladin, Iron, and Silver pieces can stay in inventory; carrying them is not the problem. Equipping metal leaves the wearer unable to act in the magnetic field.
Magnetic Cavern: first two floors
On the entrance floor, cross the first bridge fully east to HiPotion. Return to its ladder and head south across the middle island, then west over the next bridge. Circle the western rock to collect Unihorn beside the descent. The next area displays B2F.
On B2F, follow the western chasm around to its northwest chest for Ether1. Return and enter the northeast room. Follow the room’s right side for Ether1, then the farther chest for 2000 Gil. Leave the room and continue to the descent to B3F.
Magnetic Cavern B3F: Fairy claw

For returning Rydia, compare Rune arms (2,000 Gil) and Wizard body armor (1,200 Gil) with her existing gear. Keep Magus headgear if available. Check Rosa’s outfit before buying duplicates, and try retained Flame body armor on Kain before purchasing another 30,000-Gil suit.

Keep ice weapons for ordinary travel and consider Ogre for giant-family enemies instead of making it the default purely on the larger number.
After Sealed Cave: Cecil and Zeus
Remove Kain’s equipment before leaving Sealed Cave. Compare spare Zeus gloves on Cecil before storing them. Their Strength/Vitality bonuses can favor physical combat, while another piece may offer better magic protection. Consult Cecil’s equipment modifiers rather than expecting the same derived totals at every level.
Excalbur: a substantial offensive upgrade
The inventory spells the smith’s sword WeaponEquippable by Cecil (Paladin). Power 160; Acc 99%; Strength +10. Attack element: Holy.. It is a strong offensive choice for Cecil, but it is Holy-elemental. Keep Defense as an alternative when the enemy or the need for durability favors it. PS1 weapon reference

Cave Bahamut: compare Genji gloves before keeping them
Genji headgear and body armor are useful comparisons for Cecil. Gloves deserve more care: Edge can gain a little physical defense but lose evasion and magic defense by replacing Equipment: Hand armor and ringsEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 6; Eva 0; Mag Def 8; Mag Eva 6%. Resists Lightning., while Cecil loses Zeus’s Strength/Vitality bonuses. Try the piece and compare the full Status screen before keeping it.
Lunar Subterrane: Protect on Edge
The northern chest reached through B5’s hidden passages contains arms-slot Protect. It is a strong defensive option for Edge, especially if he keeps getting knocked out. Compare it with Equipment: Hand armor and ringsEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 6; Eva 0; Mag Def 8; Mag Eva 6%. Late-Game Equipment Recheck
Before the final descent, look at what your equipment still contributes. Don’t subtract bonuses from a displayed99 to guess your base stats: take the equipment off, check Status, then restore it. The following comparisons used a Level99 party; they are examples, not promised stats or battle-damage formulas.
| Choice | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Cecil: Zeus or defensive gloves | Naked Strength98 reached99 with his other final gear. Replacing Zeus with Protect left full-outfit Attack248 and Defense178 unchanged, while magic defense rose32→44. Equipment: Hand armor and ringsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin). Protect offered the same isolated Defense with better evasion and magic defense. Equipment: Hand armor and ringsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Edge, Cid. | Adamant on any final-party member | Removing and restoring only the body slot improved defenses and displayed Agility for all five, even at Level99. It remains useful after some primary stats reach99. |
These are menu comparisons. They don’t establish whether hidden bonuses above the displayed cap change combat, or prove immunity to every scripted attack. See Leveling and Grinding for the growth caveat.
Alerts and Rare Summon Items
Alert starts an encounter; it doesn’t award the rare loot. Its useful target depends on the exact location. Don’t assume that using one anywhere in a dungeon will give you the enemy you want.
| Tested location | Alert encounter | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Grass south of Baron | Six Imps | An Imp-summon target, not the Eagles needed for Cocatris. |
| Magnetic Cavern B1F | Two Mages | A way to start the Mage hunt without waiting for the ordinary formation. |
| Two tested Lunar Path passages | Two Red Worms | Not a shortcut to Bomb-summon farming; seek ordinary Grenade encounters instead. |
| Lunar Subterrane B5, lower-east Inferno room | Five PinkPuffs | A shortcut to the Pink Tail encounter, not a guaranteed tail. |
Keep an inventory slot free for the prize. If using emulator retries, preserve an ordinary save and a separate safe state before spending scarce Alerts. The rolling retry process explains how to avoid hunting for the formation again after each failed drop.
Rydia learns these Calls by using the summon-icon teaching item, not by gaining a level:
| Teaching item | Target | Learned Call / MP | Payoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imp | Imp encounters, including around Baron | Imp /1 | A cheap early Call. |
| Cocatris | Eagles; the forest northwest of Baron is a tested hunting spot | Cocat /15 | Gorgon can petrify a susceptible target. |
| Mage | Mages in the Magnetic Cavern | Mage /18 | Blast damages one target. |
| Bomb with the summon icon | Grenades in Lunar Path; keep it distinct from the ordinary Bomb consumable | Bomb /10 | Explode damages a target without sacrificing Rydia. |
All four can be collected, but none is required for the ending. Mage is a collection project, not an efficient reason to delay the story: my hunt ran across several sessions, with about50 minutes captured on one unsuccessful evening alone. Use breaks and stop when it ceases to be fun. Toad can control the Mages and does not prevent the teaching-item drop; don’t assume that trick works on Grenades or every other enemy.
Pink Tail and Repeatable Adamant Armor
The hunting room is Lunar Subterrane B5’s lower-east side room, with the Inferno chest in its northeast corner. Stay inside that room. PinkPuffs can appear as an ordinary five-enemy encounter, so Alert is helpful but not mandatory. My first natural-encounter search took about19 minutes; that is one run, not a promised wait.
PinkPuffs can interfere with your commands through Berserk and Charm. Don’t build a plan that requires every character to remain controllable. Heal before entering, and protect your separate checkpoint: charmed Cecil even cast Exit during one of my hunts, ending the battle. The exact status trigger and whether a particular outfit prevents it deserve more testing.
The drop list includes Ether2, Elixir, WeaponEquippable by Edge (Throw only). Power 80; Acc 99%. Attack element: Projectile. Consumed by Edge’s Throw; not an equippable hand weapon. and the rare Pink Tail. An ordinary prize doesn’t mean the tail cannot appear on a later attempt. One recorded Alert-assisted hunt took about44 minutes from recording to seeing the tail, including menus and short gaps; later hunts varied. That’s an example of the time commitment, not an average or deadline.
Take one Pink Tail at a time to Adamant Grotto through the Enterprise/hovercraft route used for the Rat Tail exchange. Trade it for Adamant armor. This is repeatable: I obtained five tails and ended with Adamant on all five final-party members. Save each success separately before returning to the hunt. If you only want one, protecting Rosa is a useful starting choice; Edge and Rydia are also strong candidates.
Emulator notes: the Pink Tail retry loop I used
Keep separate prebattle and working battle states. With a strong late-game party, I removed weapons from everyone except Cecil, saved immediately after the PinkPuff battle began, then used fast-forward and held the action button to finish. Check the loot slowly before touching reload.
No tail? Reload the working battle state, have the first controllable character choose Parry once, save that changed battle state, then finish again. Repeat from the progressively changed checkpoint. If that loop stalls, return to the separate prebattle state, cast Cure1-all, save the changed prebattle state and try again. Casting Cure1-all still changed subsequent outcomes when everyone was already at full HP.
Simply reloading and repeating identical actions reproduced an Elixir/Ether2 result four times in my test. Changing the sequence produced other outcomes and eventually the tails. This is a practical tested procedure, not proof of how the game’s PRNG is implemented or statistically independent retries. The weapon-removal setup depends on a powerful party; it is not a recommendation for an ordinary-level first visit.
