Land of Summons
Welcome to Rydia’s other home. You know, since you kind of ruined her old one. Before meeting the people in charge, let’s collect the treasure and visit the shops. There are some useful upgrades here, and one exceptionally ordinary-looking tail with an exceptionally useful purpose later.
B4F and the Hidden Cache
Explore the perimeter for these four chests:
| Location | Contents |
|---|---|
| West | Ether1 |
| Northwest | Bestiary |
| East | 5,000 Gil |
| South | 6,000 Gil |
Just north of the 6,000 Gil chest is a black-outlined floor tile. Walk onto it to reach a hidden room with Equipment: BowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 60%; Strength +10. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair., 10 Equipment: ArrowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 50. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair., Ether2, and Elixir. The bow and arrows share the displayed name, so look at their icons rather than assuming you picked up two bows.
Equip the Equipment: BowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 60%; Strength +10. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. on Rosa, but keep Equipment: ArrowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 35. Attacks may inflict Silence. Effective against Mage enemies. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. for ordinary travel if you still have a supply. Ten special arrows won’t last long. Rosa is right-handed: arrows belong in RHnd and the bow in LHnd. If you’re replacing a different weapon type, empty the incompatible hand first.
Use the gray tile to return upstairs. Do not continue south past it unless you want to leave the entire dungeon. That’s a real exit, not another treasure passage. After returning to B4F, move away from the hidden entrance so you don’t immediately drop back into the cache. Head for the northern teleporter into the village.
Once you arrive in the village, step back onto the arrival teleporter. The return puts you by the previously inaccessible chest containing Rat Tail. Take it, then use the teleporter again to return to town. Keep Rat Tail; its exchange comes after we regain surface access, not at Kokkol’s bed right now.
NOTE: Later, gaps in the village walkways let you see four chests on a lower level. Those are the same hidden-cache chests we just opened (even if they don’t look open to you). You aren’t missing a second set or waiting for some future ability to reach them.
Shops and Equipment
The armor shop is south, the weapon shop west, and the item shop/inn toward the northeast. Start with the armor:
| Purchase | Cost each | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Sorcerer | 30,000 Gil | One each for Rydia and Rosa. Both gain better protection without sacrificing their primary casting stat. |
| Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Cid. Def 4; Eva +34%; Mag Def 5; Mag Eva 4%; Wisdom +3. Protects against Petrify. | 20,000 Gil | A useful shield for Kain and Cecil; compare with their current shields and retain elemental alternatives. |
The two Sorcerer armors cost 60,000 Gil. Add one Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Cid. Def 4; Eva +34%; Mag Def 5; Mag Eva 4%; Wisdom +3. Protects against Petrify. for 80,000 Gil total, or two for 100,000 Gil. If funds are tight, prioritize the casters’ armor. Kain’s Diamond-to-Aegis swap improves magical protection without a physical-defense loss in this setup. Cecil can use Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Cid. Def 4; Eva +34%; Mag Def 5; Mag Eva 4%; Wisdom +3. Protects against Petrify. too; there isn’t a special reason to exclude him just because Kain got the first one.
Don’t sell every replaced piece immediately. Sorcerer and Equipment: ShieldsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Cid. Def 4; Eva +34%; Mag Def 5; Mag Eva 4%; Wisdom +3. Protects against Petrify. are useful equipment, but elemental gear may still have a job later.
With Equipment: SwordsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain. Power 105; Acc 90%. Reusable Item spell: Armor. on Cecil, Equipment: Ninja swordsEquippable by Edge. Power 48; Acc 90%; Strength +5./WeaponEquippable by Edge. Power 40; Acc 85%. Attack element: Projectile. on Edge, Equipment: RodsEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 55%; Wisdom +10. Reusable Item spell: Charm. on Rydia, and Equipment: BowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 60%; Strength +10. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. on Rosa, no weapon purchase is necessary to proceed. The counter carries Whip (3,000), Chain (6,000), Blitz (10,000), Equipment: Ninja swordsEquippable by Edge. Power 40; Acc 90%. (11,000), Equipment: RodsEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 55%; Wisdom +10. Reusable Item spell: Charm. (5,000), Lunar (7,000), and Equipment: ArrowsEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 40. Attacks may inflict Confuse. Effective against Giant enemies. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. (110 Gil each). Buy for a specific change you want to make, not simply because a new shop has opened. A second Equipment: RodsEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 30; Acc 55%; Wisdom +10. Reusable Item spell: Charm. does not make the first one cast harder.
Top up ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron. (100 Gil), HiPotion (150), and Cabin (500) as needed. Remedy costs 5,000 Gil, so check the quantity before holding down the button (or steal from toadified Malboros, like I did). Use Sort afterward to merge compatible stacks.
Rest, Save, and Explore
The inn costs 1,200 Gil, but you also have a save point. And how much does a cabin cost? Oh, right. >.> Enter the building west of the inn/item-shop building and collect Bestiary and ItemRevives a KO'd ally. Can appear as loot from a FloatEye and Eagle formation southwest of Baron. from its two chests. Use a Cabin at the seal and save before accepting either challenge.
Check the weapon and armor shops’ bookshelves while exploring, but don’t get stuck hunting indefinitely for a Grimoire if they give you nothing. Those bookshelf pickups still need PS1-specific confirmation; the chest route above is separate from that uncertainty.
The library has a chocobo outside. Go downstairs to meet the queen and king. Talking to the queen leads to the first optional challenge; finish shopping, healing, and saving before accepting it.
