Final Fantasy IV PS1 Character Guide
Rydia: Abilities and Level Progression
Rydia joins in Kaipo with 30 HP. That is not a typo, and it is not much of a cushion. Put her in the back row before leaving town and let Cecil handle the physical punishment while she gets her first few levels.
Her main job is magic, but don’t overlook the equipped weapon’s Item use. A reusable rod attack can save a surprising amount of MP between rests.
What Does She Learn Next?
| Available | Category | Spell | MP | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | Black | MagicA spell Rydia learns on her first level-up after joining, announced beside an ice icon. | 5 | Early ice damage. |
| Level 3 | White | MagicA spell Rydia learns on her second level-up after joining; its displayed icon still needs identification. | 3 | Routine healing. |
| By Level 3 | Call | MagicRydia's 7-MP Call spell, available by Level 3. The attack is ChocKick. | 7 | A useful early summon attack. |
| Level 4 | White | Sight | 2 | Checking the world map. |
| Level 5 | Black | MagicA spell Rydia learns upon reaching Level 5; its list, icon, and MP cost remain to be captured. | 5 | Early lightning damage. |
| Level 7 | White | Hold | 5 | Trying to stop a troublesome enemy from acting. |
| Level 8 | Black | Sleep | 12 | Sleep where it works; relatively expensive this early. |
| Level 10 | Black | Venom | 2 | A cheap status option. |
| Level 12 | Black | Warp | 4 | Retracing dungeon transitions. |
| Level 13 | Black | Toad | 7 | Transforming susceptible targets. |
| Level 15 | Black | Stop | 15 | Buying time against a dangerous target. |
| Mt. Hobs story event | Black | MagicA 5-MP Black Magic spell on Tellah's starting list that Rydia learns while melting the ice at Mt. Hobs-West. | 5 | Melting the ice and opening the route. |
MagicA 5-MP Black Magic spell on Tellah's starting list that Rydia learns while melting the ice at Mt. Hobs-West. is a STORY unlock. Grinding outside Kaipo won’t substitute for the Mt. Hobs scene. Conversely, the other exact levels above come from learning messages and level checks, not the location where our party happened to earn the EXP.
Warp is not a one-cast Exit. It can send you back through side-room transitions before it finally gets you outside. Repeated casts can work, but budget the MP or use Exit when that option is available.
Summon Items Are Not Level Rewards
Using the Imp item teaches Call Imp for 1 MP and consumes the teaching item. Finding it around Damcyan does not mean every Level 14 Rydia automatically learns Imp. Enemy, teaching item and summon share the name; context matters.
The other rare teaching items unlock Cocat15MP, Mage18MP and Bomb10MP. See rare summon hunting for targets, Alert uses and the time commitment. These are optional collection goals, not missing level-up rewards.
Save MP with Rods
In battle, open Item, move up to the equipped weapon and use Rod or EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1.. The tested EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1. effect deals ice damage without spending MP, and the weapon remains available afterward. That’s useful against suitable targets, not a reason to ignore elemental absorption.
Keep an offensive option for enemies your current rod doesn’t handle well. Cecil hitting undead for almost nothing is a good reminder that “Fight until it’s dead” is not always the cheap option.

The Level99 row is an unequipped example from a run using optional save-state rerolls, not a promised final result. Post-70 growth varies.
There is no individual Status checkpoint for Levels 2 or 10, so those rows are not invented. The Level 1→3 change covers TWO levels.

These are base primary stats, with equipment bonuses removed. HP and MP are the recorded maxima from this run, not guaranteed rolls. A dash means the base value is not established; missing levels are not interpolated. Attack, Defense and their multipliers are separate derived combat values.

Returning Rydia: magic, summons and later equipment (story spoilers)
A Different Magic Role
When Rydia returns at Dwarven Castle, her menus are Black and Call, not White. Treat her as your offensive caster and summoner; don’t plan on her continuing to supply MagicA spell Rydia learns on her second level-up after joining; its displayed icon still needs identification..
At the recorded Level 32 return she had 747 HP and 247 MP. Her Black menu already contained MagicA spell Rydia learns on her first level-up after joining, announced beside an ice icon./MagicA spell Rydia learns upon reaching Level 5; its list, icon, and MP cost remain to be captured./MagicA 5-MP Black Magic spell on Tellah's starting list that Rydia learns while melting the ice at Mt. Hobs-West. (5 each), Sleep (12), Venom (2), Warp (4), Toad (7), Stop (15), Piggy (1), Magic20-MP Black Magic learned by Palom at Level 19. Its combat effect has not yet been tested on this run. (20), Psych (0), and MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 15 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run./MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 15 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run./MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 15 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. (15 each). This is availability at return, not proof that all those spells are learned at 32.
Later Learning Milestones
| Level | Black Magic | MP |
|---|---|---|
| 39 | MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 30 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. | 30 |
| 42 | MagicBlack Magic in Tellah's post-trial menu, costing 30 MP. Its effect has not yet been tested on this run. | 30 |
| 47 | Quake | 30 |
| 49 | Stone | 15 |
| 55 | Flare | 50 |
This is the verified milestone list, not a complete spell-learning chart. A missing row does not mean she learns nothing. Later intermediate stat checkpoints still need equipment reconciliation before becoming a reliable level-gain table.
Calls to Look Forward To
| Call menu name | MP | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| MagicRydia's 7-MP Call spell, available by Level 3. The attack is ChocKick. | 7 | Confirmed in her early menu. |
| Imp | 1 | Use the optional teaching item; not guaranteed by leveling. |
| Mist | 20 | Available when she returns. |
| Titan | 40 | Available when she returns. |
| Shiva, SummonRydia's lightning summon. Costs 30 MP; its attack is displayed as Thunder. Check elemental defenses before using it., Ifrit | 30 each | Available when she returns. |
| Asura | 50 | Earned in the summoned-monster village. |
| SummonBattle-menu summon learned from Leviatan. All-target offense is unsafe while CPU's Attacker must survive. | 50 | Earned from Leviatan; the menu uses this shorter name. |
| SummonBattle-menu summon learned from Bahamut. Costs 60 MP; do not assume every boss permits counter-free use. | 60 | Earned from Bahamut on the Moon. |
Later summons are acquired through events and optional encounters, not simply by grinding. This table lists verified entries rather than claiming the entire Call collection is covered.
Rebuild Her Outfit
The return outfit is Whip, empty head slot, EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Palom, Porom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 3; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 3%. Protects against Petrify. and Silver arms. A retained Magus fills that head slot usefully: at the checked level it added 3 Wis/Will and improved magic protection. Wizard body and Rune arms were further tested upgrades.
EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Kain, Edge, Rydia (both forms), Palom, Edward. Power 28; Acc 94%. Reusable Item attack with no MP cost. gives her a reusable no-MP attack, but later rods can carry valuable magic-stat bonuses. Compare the entire Status panel before choosing solely by Attack. Her endgame build in this run used Stardust, ArmorEquippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 9; Eva +2%; Mag Def 12; Mag Eva 12%. Protects against Poison, Darkness, Silence, Pig, Mini, Toad, Petrify, KO, Berserk, Confuse, Sleep, Paralyze, Curse, Gradual Petrification. Status protection does not prevent damage or guarantee safety from scripted attacks., Sorcerer and Rune; that’s a successful caster outfit, not a requirement to match every piece immediately.
Level 70 and Beyond
Later primary-stat rolls can gain or lose points. Reaching the same level does not guarantee the same final stats, especially if you retry unfavorable rolls. Compare the same equipment and ammunition before deciding what a level-up changed. See Leveling and Grinding. Level 99 is an optional project, not a requirement for finishing the game.
Don’t discard equipment just because its primary-stat bonus no longer changes a displayed99. In the Level99 example above, Serpent lowered Wisdom and Will to94, then Adamant restored both99. Adding Rune changed neither primary stat, but still improved Defense power146→151, Mag Def power32→40 and Mag Eva48%→56%. Check the whole Status panel, not just Wisdom.
Equipment Modifiers
Equipment bonuses are fixed; they do not increase with your level. Add these primary-stat modifiers to the base values above. Defense and evasion belong to the equipment/combat calculation, not the five primary stats. This is the relevant equipment selection, not an exhaustive catalog.
| Equipment | Primary-stat modifier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rod / EquipmentEquippable by Rydia (both forms), Palom, Tellah, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 45%. Attack element: Ice. Effective against Reptile enemies. Reusable Item spell: Ice1.; Leather / Feather; EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 2; Eva 0; Mag Def 2; Mag Eva 1%. / EquipmentGloves. Def 0; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 2%. Protects against Pig. Equippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). | None to the five primary stats | Early primary values already equal base stats. |
| Magus | +3 Wis, +3 Will | Later headgear. |
| Tiara | +10 Wis | Later headgear; replaces rather than stacks with Magus. |
