Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough
Return to Kaipo
We’ve got the SandRuby. Let’s go help Rosa before getting distracted by another cave.
Back Across the Shallows
Return to your hovercraft outside Antlion Cave. Stop at Damcyan if you need recovery: upstairs, the left pot restores HP and status, and the right restores MP.
Use the shallows to return to Kaipo rather than trying to walk back through the Water Cavern. Save outside town, visit Rosa, and select SandRuby when the item menu opens. Thankfully, this cure involves exposing her to its light rather than persuading her to swallow something an Antlion made. After playing Lunar Silver Star Story and obtaining a Dragon Diamond, that is a slight relief. >.>
Watch the conversation. Rosa explains more about Golbez and the Crystals, and the party decides that Fabul is the next place in danger. Getting there means crossing Mt. Hobs, where the ice is still a problem.
Rosa insists on coming along as our White Mage. Before we get to reorganize the party, though, Edward has something to do.
Edward’s Night Out
Edward goes to the water to think about Anna, and a WaterHag interrupts him.
Boss Fight Prep
This is a scripted solo encounter. You don’t need to arrange the rest of the party for it.
Anna appears during the battle to encourage him. Three attacks finished my fight. Don’t use an ordinary WaterHag HP listing as a countdown for this one; the story sequence doesn’t match that record.
Afterward, watch their farewell. In the morning, we finally have four characters to work with.
Rosa’s Bow and Arrows
Rosa starts with a EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 30%. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. and EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 5. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair.. If you picked up EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 10; Acc 35%. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. in Damcyan, equip it instead of EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 5; Acc 30%. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair.. With Brass, that gave my Rosa 17 Attack. EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 10. Attack element: Holy. Effective against Ghoul, Undead enemies. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. raised it to 22, but I kept those for enemies where they would be more useful. YMMV depending on levels.
Pay attention to her hands: arrows in RHnd, bow in LHnd. Rosa is right-handed. The game will let you reverse those, but will reduce her damage quite a bit.
If an equipment swap won’t work, empty both hand slots first. A bow or arrows won’t go in while the other hand contains incompatible equipment. Then put the arrows in her right hand and the bow in her left.
Arrows get used up, including when she uses Aim. Keep an eye on the equipped stack, not just the spare arrows in your bag. There is a longer explanation under handedness and bow-arrow alignment.
Put the Fragile People in Back
Order changes party slots; Row flips which slots are in front. You can’t just give every character an independent front/back setting, but most of the time it’s clear who should go where.
Here’s a useful arrangement:
| Slot | Character | Row |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rosa | Back |
| 2 | Cecil | Front |
| 3 | Rydia | Back |
| 4 | Empty | Front |
| 5 | Edward | Back |
Use Row until you have three back-row slots and two front-row slots. With the second front position empty, Cecil is the only person up front. Don’t feel bad for him, he’s just wearing armor for the rest of the party.
A back attack can reverse the rows. If the mages suddenly find themselves taking the hits, press left on a character’s battle turn to reach Row and put the formation right.
Rosa handles healing, Rydia handles offensive magic and summons, and Edward can attack, Sing, or Heal as needed. Remember that Edward’s Heal spends a Potion. Rosa’s Pray doesn’t spend MP, but it can fail, so don’t rely on prayer alone when someone is nearly dead.
Heal, save, and take the hovercraft back across the shallows toward Damcyan, then east toward Mt. Hobs.
