Final Fantasy IV PS1 Walkthrough
Opening and Baron Castle
Start a New Game and watch the opening. By the time you get control of Cecil, may have a few questions about the people you’re working for (like he does). You’ll note that asking those questions isn’t a great career move.
The story begins on Baron Castle (2F) as a Level 10 Dark Knight. Before heading off to bed, let’s look around the castle and pick up a few things. Yes, we’re going to loot the castle; you’ll be doing that pretty much everywhere you go. We have precisely zero Gil at this point, so free stuff sounds pretty good.
Meet Cecil
Open the menu if you’d like to get acquainted. Cecil starts with 200 HP, no MP, and a full set of Shadow equipment. The equipment icons tell you which piece you’re looking at: sword, shield, helmet, body armor, and gloves. Yes, they all say Shadow. Someone was very committed to the theme.
Leave that equipment on for now. You can’t cast Magic, and the BombRing in your inventory is part of your assignment, not a new accessory to equip. If you like looking at the numbers, Cecil’s abilities and levels has the full breakdown. Otherwise, close the menu and let’s go find some treasure.
A Little Castle Exploration
Talk to people as you go, and learn a bit about our current situation and various game mechanics. After that, head down to the next screen.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Enter the lower-left room and examine the button to open the treasure room. |
| 2 | Open all three chests. From left to right, they contain 480 Gil, 1x Ether, and 1x Tent. Save these for later. |
| 3 | The stairs going up at the bottom-right lead to the treasury, but you can’t get in yet. |
| 4 | Return and take the stairs heading up-left to meet Rosa. |
Rosa, Cid, and a Night’s Sleep
After talking to Rosa, continue through the door. Take the door on the left to visit the dungeon and speak to the people being held there. Given what you saw in the opening, this is probably worth hearing before you call it a night.
Leave the dungeon and follow the path upward to meet Cid. When you’ve finished talking, the stairs he came down lead to the infirmary. You can visit that too, then take the door at the top of the screen to reach Cecil’s Bedchamber.
When you’re done exploring, go to bed and watch the remaining conversations. Eventually the game takes you outside with Kain in your party. Enjoy having someone else around to help with the fighting.
Ready to Leave?
Now that you’re on the world map, make an ordinary save before wandering off. Kain has a Spear and Iron armor, and neither of your characters can cast Magic. Keep their starting equipment on. You can read Kain’s abilities and levels if you want his stats, but there’s no need to stop and compare every number before taking a step.
Notice how the map appears to show the town surrounding the castle? Stepping on the castle takes you back there, but stepping on the town takes you to a different location. We’ll visit the town of Baron before heading for Mist. There are more free items to collect, a few useful explanations of the game, and an optional Chocobo Forest detour. Continue with Baron Region and Mist Cave when you’re ready.
