Damcyan Castle
That was not the welcome we were hoping for. Before heading upstairs, there’s an easy-to-miss side entrance with quite a bit of useful equipment.
The Eastern Dungeon
Barely step away from the castle entrance and follow the outside wall all the way right. The door at the far eastern edge leads into Dungeon. Talk to the surviving man, then look for the faint button on the wall.

Give Feather to Rydia. EquipmentEquippable by Everyone except Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 0; Eva 0; Mag Def 3; Mag Eva 2%. Protects against Pig. improves her magical defense, but can lower physical defense compared with what she’s wearing; make that trade deliberately rather than assuming everything in a new chest must be better. Keep EquipmentEquippable by Cecil (Paladin), Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Cid, Palom, Porom, Edward, FuSoYa. Power 10; Acc 35%. Attack element: Projectile. Requires a bow-and-arrow pair. and the arrows for later.
Up Through the Castle
Talk to the survivors on 1F, then climb to 2F. Open the remaining chest for a ItemField/save-point recovery, restoring up to 1,000 HP and 100 MP. At higher levels, check your remaining deficits before continuing.. The stairs at the bottom of this screen lead up to 3F and the next story scene.
Take Tellah’s equipment off before going up if you haven’t already. He won’t be staying with us after this conversation, and I’d rather not send our new Feather and EquipmentEquippable by Edge, Rydia (both forms), Rosa, Yang, Palom, Porom, Edward, Tellah, FuSoYa. Def 2; Eva 0; Mag Def 2; Mag Eva 1%. off with him.
You Spoony Bard!
The scene upstairs introduces Anna and Edward, along with one of the more memorable insults in Final Fantasy. Tellah’s response to finding them is not exactly a calm family discussion. On the other hand (etymology digression alert), “spoony” is archaic english that basically means one is doing something foolishly or sentimentally - which works pretty well in this instance.
Let the sequence play out. You’ll learn what happened to Damcyan, hear more about Golbez, and see why Tellah leaves. Cecil still needs help getting the Sand Ruby, and Edward knows how to reach it.
Edward joins as a Bard and provides a hovercraft (which almost makes up for him being such a wuss). Before taking it for a spin, move him to the back row. He starts at Level 5 with only 60 HP. His harp is useful from back there, and he doesn’t need to volunteer as a one-shot shield.
Free Recovery and a New Ride
Press X to board the hovercraft, and X again to land. It crosses the rocky shallows in the water, not the open ocean.
Antlion Cave is east of Damcyan across those shallows. You can also reach Mt. Hobs-West, but ice blocks the path there for now so ignore it for now.
Save outside, check that everyone is healthy, and continue to Antlion Cave. If you want Edward’s starting numbers and equipment details, they’re on Edward’s abilities and levels.
