Final Fantasy IV PS1 Character Guide

Cecil: Abilities and Level Progression

Cecil starts as our front-line fighter. He can take a hit, and for quite a while his main job is to keep the fragile people behind him from having to do the same. Keep him in front, keep his sword in his right hand, and don’t be shy about using a Potion when the party has no healer.

His Dark Knight and Paladin levels are DIFFERENT progression tracks. The later section below contains a major story spoiler; leave it closed until you’ve finished Mt. Ordeals.

Dark Knight: Commands and Equipment

Cecil begins at Level 10 with 200 HP and no MP. His ordinary command list is Fight, Dark, Item. He cannot cast magic.

One controlled Dark use spent 51 HP with a 412 maximum. That’s a useful warning about its cost, not a promise that every use will cost 51.

The early equipment path is Shadow, then the Dark sword and Equipment: Body armorEquippable by Cecil (Dark Knight). Def 7; Eva −10%; Mag Def 2; Mag Eva 0. from the Water Cavern/Waterfall route, then Demon armor and the Death sword around Fabul. Death is an equipment upgrade, not a permanent stat increase. Keep it separate when comparing levels.

Starting equipment and combat numbers

Cecil starts with sword, shield, helmet, body armor and gloves all labeled Shadow with their respective icons. With that outfit: Attack 2 × 15, Accuracy 82%, Defense 1 × 17, Evasion 22%, Mag Def 0 × 1, Mag Eva 1%. He starts with 3,000 EXP and needs 334 more for Level 11. The paired combat fields below use multiplier × power; they are not a single damage or protection number.

Dark Knight Base Stats by Level

These are base primary stats, with equipment bonuses removed. HP and MP are the recorded maxima from this run, not guaranteed rolls. A dash means the base value is not established; missing levels are not interpolated. Attack, Defense and their multipliers are separate derived combat values.

Will at Levels 22–24 is left blank: the equipped reading was at the lower limit, so it does not establish an unequipped value. The earlier Will drops at 15 and 20 are retained.

Paladin abilities, growth and equipment (Mt. Ordeals spoilers)

Becoming a Paladin

Cecil restarts at Level 1 with 600 HP and 10 MP. This is not a loss of the old character’s accumulated stats to be fixed by reloading. His new progression starts here, and he catches up quickly.

Keep Legend in his right hand. He gains White Magic, making him useful for supplementary healing, but that doesn’t turn him into Rosa. Spend some of his MP on routine recovery so your primary healer has more left for emergencies.

“By” identifies a confirmed menu checkpoint, not an exact learning level. Cure2 and Exit have specific level evidence; the other later acquisition points still need tighter confirmation.

Automatic Protection

Cecil can step in front of a critically injured ally without you selecting a command. This happened repeatedly when Tellah was kneeling during physical attacks. Heal BOTH of them afterward; it isn’t much of a rescue if Cecil takes the next few hits and falls over himself. Don’t assume this stops every kind of attack.

The set improves protection and Will, but not every displayed defensive field rises.

Paladin Armor: Mysidia Return

Each piece contributes the following fixed bonuses. These are item modifiers, not Cecil’s final Status totals. Evasion changes are percentage points.

Legend and the four Paladin pieces add 15 Will in total. At Level 11, base Will 13 becomes 16 with Legend, or 28 with Legend and the full armor set. The armor bonuses stay the same at later levels; derived multipliers may change as Cecil’s stats grow.

The Level 99 row is an example from a run using optional save-state rerolls. Post-70 growth varies, so those totals are not a promised result or a target you need to reach. All equipment was removed for that reading.

Later Weapon Choices

A bigger Attack number can come with a tradeoff. At Level 29, swapping Legend for Flame raises Attack power 54→79 but lowers Accuracy 99%→87% and Will 35→32. For the Magnetic Cavern, carry a nonmetal outfit and a usable bow/arrow pair rather than selling every older item as soon as you find a stronger sword.

If Cecil uses a bow, put arrows in his right hand and the bow in his left. A same-level comparison raised Attack power 27→33 simply by correcting those hands. See equipment and handedness and the cave outfit.

Level 70 and Beyond

Later primary-stat rolls can gain or lose points. Reaching the same level does not guarantee the same final stats, especially if you retry unfavorable rolls. Compare the same equipment and ammunition before deciding what a level-up changed. See Leveling and Grinding. Level 99 is an optional project, not a requirement for finishing the game.
