Final Fantasy XII Walkthrough
Phon Coast and Tchita Uplands
Phon Coast
First things first - DON’T OPEN THE BLOCK OF 16 TREASURE CONTAINERS ON THE SOUTHERN BEACH OF THE VADDU STRAND!!! Ahem. Sorry - see Missables and One-Time Content for the full Zodiac Spear Weapon: Spear 150 Attack. The guaranteed original-release copy is lost if any of four linked treasure groups are opened first. warning. This is one specific 4 by 4 arrangement of containers, not every treasure in the entire Phon Coast.
Leave all 16 containers in the tightly packed block along the southern beach of The Vaddu Strand unopened. Opening even one breaks the original release’s guaranteed Zodiac Spear condition.
(Left all 16 unopened :Mark this permanent or one-time condition as safely handled. Progress is shared across Final Fantasy XII pages in this browser. )
Other Phon Coast treasure is not part of this condition. See Missables and One-Time Content for the complete four-group checklist.

Weakness Water Steal chances Item Normal Thief's Cuffs Hunting Crossbow Weapon: Crossbow A crossbow carried by the repeatable Rare Game Tarasque. It needs equipped bolts and the matching License, and crossbow accuracy falls during bad weather.3% 6%
Normal Steal checks rare to common and stops at the first success. Thief's Cuffs can take multiple items; chains do not affect Steal.
Drop chances Item No chain Chain Lv 1 Chain Lv 2 Chain Lv 3 Horn Loot Early Gigantoad and Suriander Loot; sell two with three Wind Stones and two Foul Flesh to unlock Light Spear.40% 45% 50% 55% Solid Horn Loot Rare Tarasque Loot used in later Bazaar equipment; retain it until the needed recipe quantities are planned.3% 6% 8% 12%
Each item gets its own independent roll. Chain level, not raw chain count, controls these rates.
Earth Elemental: It can appear during cloudy weather and is passive until provoked, including by nearby Magick. It absorbs Earth and is weak to Wind.
Bellwyvern: It is Flying, so keep a ranged weapon, pole, spear, or Magick user available.
Feral Croc: It begins under Protect. Dispel helps if one is slowing the route down.
Tarasque: Build a Chain of at least 21 enemies, Serpents are the convenient choice, then check near the northern edge of Garden of Life’s Circle. This repeatable Rare Game carries a Hunting Crossbow and is not a Trophy Rare Game.
If you want, you can spend some time stealing from the Coeurls Enemy An Ice-weak Tchita Uplands enemy whose Blaster can inflict dangerous status effects; its rare Steal is an EXP-doubling Embroidered Tippet. here. You can steal an Embroidered Tippet Accessory Doubles EXP earned by the wearer. , which will double your EXP earned. This makes leveling up go a LOT faster. On the other hand, once you reach Old Archades, you can BUY these from one of the shopkeepers there for about 5,000 gil each. You’ve probably nearly filled out your License area already anyway, so you don’t need the Golden Amulets any more.
Equip Thief’s Cuffs on the party leader.
Put Foe: HP = 100% -> Steal above the leader’s ordinary attack rule.
Let the other two party members handle damage so the leader gets one clean Steal attempt before the target loses HP.
Coeurl begins under Shell and can use Blaster, so keep status recovery available.
Stop when the time cost outweighs the EXP gain. The accessory will soon be sold in Old Archades.
The Soul Ward Key Errand
At The Nameless Spring, talk to the Archadian Wayfarer and accept the unposted hunt. Well, sort of. You’ll get the Soul Ward Key Key Item The Archadian Wayfarer at The Nameless Spring gives the Soul Ward Key when the party accepts his unposted hunt. Use it beyond Doubt Abandoned in Sochen Cave Palace to open the route toward the Mandragoras and continue the story. , at any rate. Continue through Garden of Life’s Circle and The Highlands to the Gate Crystal at The Chosen Path.
Optional: Diamond Armlet
There’s another Easter egg here. If you look at the map of the Tchita Uplands, you’ll see a blue Save Crystal down in the southern half, The Nameless Spring. Just south of this area is an area called Garden of Life’s Circle. You can get a Diamond Armlet Accessory Changes treasure contents when equipped by an active party member; it can improve or worsen a specific original-release chest. here, if you’re willing to be patient.
It seems like the odds aren’t very good, but it’s worth it when you go looking for things like a Ribbon Accessory Blocks every negative status except Instant Death, X-Zone, and Stone. later on.
Save normally at The Nameless Spring and run for the chest. If it does not appear, reload the normal save and try again. If it does appear, make a save state before opening it. If you DON’T get the Diamond Armlet, reload the state, perform an action that advances the random state, such as attacking or casting Cure, save state again, and reopen the chest.
Keep the normal save. A save state can preserve the missing chest or an unwanted treasure roll. See Diamond Armlet in the Tchita Uplands for the reusable method.
Optional: Early Cerobi Steppe and Ribbon
This detour can produce a Ribbon before the Mandragoras , but the chest is a serious grind. Get the Diamond Armlet above first, then return to Hunters’ Camp and rent another chocobo.
At Hunters’ Camp, rent a chocobo and choose the route toward Tchita Uplands.
Ride through Caima Hills, Limatra Hills, and Rava’s Pass into Tchita Uplands. Stay mounted.
Cross Tchita Uplands to The Shaded Pass, the eastern area with the blue save point.
Find the rubble blocking the eastern path. Ride directly up and over it. The same obstruction is impassable on foot.
The far side places you in Old Elanise Road in Cerobi Steppe. The enemies here are far stronger than the story route expects, so flee and keep moving rather than trying to clear each area.
Reach Journey’s Rest and make a normal save before checking Crossfield.
Equip the Diamond Armlet on an active party member. The Crossfield Ribbon chest has a 50% appearance check, a 30% item check, and then a 10% Ribbon result, or about 1.5% per entry.
Continue south to Balfonheim Port and activate its Gate Crystal for an easier return. Do not count on entering the city proper or using its normal shops at this story phase.
See Ribbon in the Cerobi Steppe for the Crossfield chest position and emulator reroll method.
I could not find any Urn for this area, but I was able to get 3 Embroidered Tippets without much trouble. I just enabled the Thief’s Cuffs on Basch and put him as the party lead, with the Gambit “Foe: HP = 100% -> Steal” enabled.
To Sochen Cave Palace
Head to the northeastern corner of the map. From The Chosen Path, where you meet the boy, head east one screen and north one screen to Fields of Eternity. The cave entrance is at the northwest corner of that area.
