Final Fantasy XII Walkthrough

Balfonheim Port and Cerobi Steppe

Balfonheim Port

After a multitude of cut scenes, talk to CharacterThe Balfonheim pirate who organizes the Footrace and petitions the Pylraster hunt after the party returns from the Pharos; one race attempt is required, but winning is not., Elza and Raz. Explore the town, especially the shops. Be sure to check out the Whitecap’s Notice Board for five new Marks. Montblanc also has two new Elite Marks. As always, I recommend taking out the Marks before heading to the next area. You can start the Vyraal hunt right here.

There’s an ItemFully restores one ally’s HP and MP. in one of the Port Villas. I occasionally got a ItemFully restores the active party’s HP and MP. here and recommended saving and reloading, although current original-release treasure data places that upgrade after Ridorana. Open it if you want the current item; do not make this a long reload project yet.

Near the Aerodrome, you can find a Fishing Enthusiast. That’s his full name. Talk to him twice and ask about the fishing rod. Walk down toward the Aerodrome entrance, talk to someone there, then return. Examine the rod leaning where the enthusiast was, then take the Key ItemThe first fishing rod. Take it from Chivany Breakwater after speaking to the Fishing Enthusiast, then deliver it to Ruksel in South Bank Village. to CharacterThe South Bank Village fisherman who operates the minigame. Give him Muramata to begin, then Matamune to open the final two fishing stages. in South Bank Village. See Fishing for the complete start.

If you have the Key ItemA key item obtained from Giza during the Rains. After Draklor Laboratory, show it to the scattered Cockatrices to complete Cockatrice Round-Up., talk to the Miffed Moogle, then the chocobo wrangler, show her the Feather of the Flock, then talk to the Miffed Moogle again and finally Gurdy. You’ll get a little bit of information from Moomer, then a Defender from the Miffed Moogle. This is the Balfonheim stop in Cockatrice Round-Up.

Head to Sea Breeze Lane in the northeast and activate the Field MechanicA Save Crystal that also enables Teleport Stone travel to other activated Gate Crystals.. Save your game.

Optional Errands Before the Feywood

As usual, there are many things you can do before heading off to the Feywood. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Work through the seven new hunts. The Clan Centurio and Hunts page keeps the Accepted and Completed states together.
  2. Complete Cockatrice Round-Up. This will take you many places.
  3. Finish the Nabreus Medallions, if you haven’t already.
  4. Return to Archades, use a Key ItemPermanent Archades status token obtained by trading all twenty-eight Pinewood Chops to a Chopmaster. It satisfies the cab requirement and opens later high-status areas and sidequests. to enter the Highgarden Terrace, and talk to the Hunt Club Owner. Then teleport to Phon Coast, talk to the Huntmaster, and defeat Trophy Rare GameThalassinon begins the Hunt Club trophy hunt but is not one of the 30 trophies submitted to the three brothers. to open Rare Game and Hunt Club. Do not touch the 16-container block on The Vaddu Strand if you still need the guaranteed Weapon: Spear150 Attack. The guaranteed original-release copy is lost if any of four linked treasure groups are opened first..
  5. Finish Ktjn’s conversations.
  6. Start Fishing.
  7. Begin hunting Bestiary SystemAn enemy with a special spawn condition; ordinary Rare Game can respawn, while Trophy Rare Game is one-time. after opening the Hunt SystemThe Phon Coast sidequest that trades 30 Trophy Rare Game trophies among Atak, Blok, and Stok for rewards.. Trophy enemies never respawn after you defeat them, so farm a valuable Steal before making the kill.

Cerobi Steppe

Start the Vyraal quest first, then head north from Balfonheim into South Liavell Hills.

You will start in South Liavell Hills. Head to the northwest exit to North Liavell Hills, then continue north and west to The Terraced Bank. Many enemies here are not immune to Time Magick / Status Effect20 MP. Halts one target’s movement and actions for the duration.. If you have Ammunition: BombHand-bomb ammunition with a chance to inflict Stop. Pair it with an equipped hand-bomb such as Fumarole and switch away when Stop is ineffective., use them!

If you complete Vyraal, take the Key ItemReceived with the Vyraal hunt bounty; exchange it with the Wyrm Philosopher at Cerobi Steppe's Windmill 10 for the Ageworn Key used to reach Hell Wyrm. to the Wyrm Philosopher at Windmill 10 in The Northsward. He’ll exchange it for the Ageworn Key. That opens the sealed route in Sochen Cave Palace used for the Hell Wyrm. If the Hunt SystemThe Phon Coast sidequest that trades 30 Trophy Rare Game trophies among Atak, Blok, and Stok for rewards. is open and Trophy Rare GameAspidochelon is one of the 30 submittable Trophy Rare Game. appears in Feddik River, steal LootRequired for Matchless Steel (1 sold) in the Bazaar. before killing it; the Trophy enemy will not respawn.

Head north to Journey’s Rest. Turn off your Gambits, equip a AccessoryChanges treasure contents when equipped by an active party member; it can improve or worsen a specific original-release chest. to the party leader, and save. Then head north into Crossfield.

Optional: Ribbon in Crossfield

You can get a VERY cool item here, a Ribbon, but the chest is a serious grind. The useful chest is near the north edge of Crossfield in the square-shaped gap, roughly one quarter of the way west from the Northsward transition. It has a 50% appearance check, a 30% item check, and then a 10% Ribbon result with the AccessoryChanges treasure contents when equipped by an active party member; it can improve or worsen a specific original-release chest.. That’s about a 1.5% chance per entry.

There are three boulders with possible chests. The one just north of the Journey’s Rest crystal is not the one you want. The one farther across and slightly west, with a trap behind it, is not the one either. The correct boulder is farther north and east; once the Strahl anchor appears on the map, its square is up and right from that icon. A direct check took me about 55 to 65 seconds.

Crossfield Ribbon Checks
StepAction
1Save normally at the Save Crystal in Journey’s Rest.
2Disable the party’s Gambits and equip the AccessoryChanges treasure contents when equipped by an active party member; it can improve or worsen a specific original-release chest. on the active leader.
3Enter Crossfield and run to the square-shaped gap near the north edge.
4If the chest is absent, reload the normal save or use a complete two-zone respawn route before checking again.
5If the chest appears but does not contain a Ribbon, continue checking from a safe reset point. Opening unrelated Cerobi treasure is not a verified requirement for making this chest appear.

I find that this is a good time to use my TV’s PnP feature. I can watch the Cotton Bowl on the main screen, and play the game in the small window. It took me about two hours to identify the correct chest and another hour to produce a second Ribbon, so do not mistake a bad streak for proof that you are checking the wrong place.

Emulator Note: Faster Ribbon Checks

Make a normal save at Journey’s Rest first. Once the chest appears, save-state before opening it. If it does not contain a Ribbon, reload, perform an action that advances the random state, such as attacking or casting White Magick8 MP. Restores a small amount of HP to one ally and damages an undead target., save-state again, and reopen it. Do not overwrite the normal save with a state that has already locked in a missing chest.

See Ribbon in the Cerobi Steppe for the complete reroll and respawn method.

When you are finished with Balfonheim and Cerobi, teleport to Golmore Jungle.
