Luca

Arrival in Luca

So… You’ve arrived in Luca, eh? Just look at the crowd, folks. All four fans have turned out to root for the Goers. ;) When you first arrive on the docks, don’t try to board the ship; you can’t. Instead, talk to the highly intelligent townsfolk. They’ll show you their BLISTERING insights into the nuances of everyday life. (“Hey, you came over across the water. Wet, ain’t it!”)

Anyway, head right, save your game, and continue along the docks. We’re off to meet the Maester! The wonderful Maester of… Um, odd? Never mind. Meet the Maesters. See the guy with spiral chest hair? Isn’t that creepy? We’ll BossGuado maester fought at Macalania Temple in a three-phase battle involving two Guado Guardians and Anima. of him later.

Back in the Aurochs’ locker room, pay attention to the MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. tutorial if this is your first time. In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve never really gotten into MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components.. I think the problem was not understanding it very well. If you’re the kind of person who likes sidequests and minigames, pay close attention to each part of the tutorial. If you hate minigames, the first match is mandatory but winning it isn’t.

Actually, I’ve had a change of heart. I’m going to explain the bits needed to make the MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. system work and what you can do about it. Obtaining certain weapons for Wakka will require you to learn some MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. proficiency, so a good walkthrough really should have it. On the bright side, not all powerful weapons require mastering annoying minigames. Just most of them. >.>

Around Town

Once Yuna says something about Auron, leave the locker room and take the western stairs down to Basement B. Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. is on the floor by the Kilika Beasts, and the chest at the end of the hall contains two ItemRestores 1,000 HP to one character.. Return to the stadium’s main gate and save.

Head south into Luca, then east. Keep going until Tidus finally says, “Luca is a big town.” Take the northeast stairs to the landing and open the chest along the eastern edge for 1,000 Gil. You can’t leave town yet, so return to the central square and go north to the café. Go in and… stuff happens… Watch a little. Eventually, after that kidnapping, you’ll have to run back to the stadium.

At the main gate, go east around the harbor to Dock 5. At the far end, look for a narrow path leading east between the crates. The two difficult-to-see chests behind them contain a Sphere GridTurns an empty node into a Magic +4 node. and an Sphere GridTurns an empty node into an HP +300 node.. You’ll hit a roadblock if you continue, so return to the stadium’s main gate and save.

Now go west around the docks. On the first screen, open the chests for 600 Gil and the EquipmentKimahri weapon found at Luca's harbor with Piercing and Waterstrike., a Piercing and Equipment AbilityAdds Water element to the wielder's physical attacks. weapon for Kimahri. MerchantTraveling merchant whose later prices depend on the party's cumulative early donations. is here too. You can buy weapons, armor, and items or add to the 10,001-Gil cumulative loan discussed on the S.S. Winno. His EquipmentKimahri weapon sold by O'aka in Luca with Lightningstrike, useful against the Worker machina and Oblitzerator. gives Kimahri Equipment AbilityAdds Lightning element to the wielder's physical attacks., which is useful against the machina ahead. On the next dock, grab two ItemRevives one KO'd character with half of their maximum HP. from the chest along the southern side.

Meet the Machina

Continue around the dock path and fight the first pair of FiendAl Bhed machina encountered during the Luca rescue route; it is weak to Lightning and commonly drops a Hi-Potion or rarely an X-Potion.. They’re weak to Lightning, so I’ve found that having Tidus cast Wht MagicGrants Haste, making one target receive turns more frequently. on Lulu and letting her take them on with Thunder works well. Tidus and Kimahri can focus their attacks on one Worker at a time while she fries the other.

The next dock has another forced pair. Dock 4 follows with three consecutive waves of two Workers. After that third machina battle (the one where they keep coming), use the Field SystemField sphere used to save and restore the party's HP and MP; later spheres also connect to the airship..

Save and restore the party. Keep the EquipmentKimahri weapon sold by O'aka in Luca with Lightningstrike, useful against the Worker machina and Oblitzerator. or any other Equipment AbilityAdds Lightning element to the wielder's physical attacks. weapon equipped. Tidus, Lulu, and Kimahri are about to fight together; charge their Overdrives beforehand if you want a strong 600-damage finishing hit for the Battle SystemFinishing an enemy with at least its required final-hit damage threshold, commonly improving AP or item rewards..

Oblitzerator

Catch the boat and do some damage! Cast Haste on Lulu first, then have her hit the Boss PartEnvironmental target in the Oblitzerator battle; three Thunder spells power it so Tidus can use its Trigger Command against the boss. with Thunder three times. Don’t waste Tidus’s turns trying the crane before it is powered. While Lulu works, Tidus and Kimahri can attack BossLuca rescue boss whose nearby crane can be powered with three Thunder spells, then used to remove 93.75% of its current HP and disable it., heal, or prepare a finishing blow, but remember that the crane removes a percentage of the boss’s current HP, so every point you deal first slightly reduces the crane’s damage.

A single Thunder will usually end the battle, but if you can land at least 600 damage with an Battle SystemCharacter or aeon special attack resource charged according to the active Overdrive mode. or another strong attack, take the Battle SystemFinishing an enemy with at least its required final-hit damage threshold, commonly improving AP or item rewards. and double the drop.

Now it’s time to play, “Let’s learn a little bit about Yuna’s family!” Okay. I love Lulu’s reaction. Remember when she told Wakka he was living in the past? Heh. That was a good one. eyeroll

My First Blitzball Game

Head back to the stadium and save in the Aurochs’ locker room. Talk to Wakka. If you want another reminder about the rules, talk to Datto. Go back to the Field SystemField sphere used to save and restore the party's HP and MP; later spheres also connect to the airship. once you’re ready; there is enough unskippable material before the match that reloading without a fresh save gets old quickly.

The most important thing to remember about MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. is this: successful actions give players experience points. If Tidus and Letty pass the ball back and forth for five minutes, they both gain experience. Tidus is the player who really needs to level up during the first half because level 3 opens his first technique slot.

First half: pass, pass, pass

Your first chance to change the control scheme comes after someone on the Aurochs gets the ball. Press the formation/control button (Triangle on the original PlayStation 2 controller) and switch from Auto to Manual A. Then press the action button (Square on the PS2) to pass to somebody who doesn’t have an opponent nearby.

Whoever has the ball should swim away from opponents and pass before getting surrounded. Concentrate on Tidus: Letty to Tidus, Tidus to Botta, Botta to Tidus, Tidus to Letty, repeat. You do NOT want the Goers collecting easy experience from successful tackles and passes, and you definitely don’t need to attack their goal yet.

The match has some RNG. If the Goers score before you ever touch the ball, you can still recover from 1–0 down, but reloading is reasonable. If you fall two goals behind, resetting will usually be faster than forcing a heroic comeback.

Halftime: equip the shot

At halftime, Tidus should have reached level 3 and gained a technique slot. Equip the Blitzball TechniqueTidus technique learned from the S.S. Winno challenge; it knocks away up to two defenders before the shot reaches the goal. you learned on the S.S. Winno. If you failed that challenge, equip Sphere Shot instead; it is a less reliable route but still gives you a chance.

The Blitzball TechniqueTidus technique learned from the S.S. Winno challenge; it knocks away up to two defenders before the shot reaches the goal. knocks away up to two defenders before adding five points to Tidus’s Shot. That is why the first half was about leveling him instead of flinging desperate shots from midfield.

Second half: score, then hide

When the Aurochs get possession, draw defenders away from the Goers’ goal, then pass to Tidus. Swim him along the lower rim of the sphere pool and get as close to the goal as you safely can. Shoot with the Blitzball TechniqueTidus technique learned from the S.S. Winno challenge; it knocks away up to two defenders before the shot reaches the goal. while no more than two opponents are blocking him. It removes those two defenders, leaving only Raudy to stop the shot.

Do this early. Wakka replaces Tidus after three minutes have elapsed in the second half, so the Blitzball TechniqueTidus technique learned from the S.S. Winno challenge; it knocks away up to two defenders before the shot reaches the goal. goes with him. If you score, return to the pass-pass-pass routine and keep the ball away from the Goers until time expires. If Tidus leaves before you score, Wakka’s Venom Shot is your fallback.

Even when you execute the plan correctly, the numbers can still turn against you. Reload if winning matters to you. I was able to win this tournament. Really. The reward is a Sphere GridTurns an empty node into a Strength +4 node..

If you like sidequests like this, have fun playing MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. throughout the game. Several people have written to tell me they got hours of enjoyment out of it. Apparently, if you’re really into sports games, this is a lot of fun. Perhaps that’s why I’m not all that into it. Maybe it will grow on me if I play it more. Feel free to read on; I’m going to go find my controller…

If you don’t enjoy it, don’t let this match convince you the whole game requires a new aquatic-sports career. Winning here is optional, although later MinigameSpira's underwater team sport and recurring minigame; successful actions earn player EXP, and later prizes include Wakka's Overdrives and Celestial Weapon components. is required for Wakka’s Overdrives and his EquipmentA character-specific ultimate weapon powered up with its matching crest and sigil.. Play around and see if you like it; restore your save and win if you want the Sphere GridTurns an empty node into a Strength +4 node. and bragging rights. At the very least, you’ll have learned how to play well. ;)

Moving On

Win or lose, the stadium is about to become considerably less sporting. Tidus and Wakka must fight seventeen FiendLightning-vulnerable fiend fought by Tidus and Wakka in repeated waves after the Luca tournament final. in waves of two or three. SkillPhysical attack that attempts to inflict Darkness for three turns. can help, and Equipment AbilityAdds Lightning element to the wielder's physical attacks. weapons work well, but this shouldn’t be a very tough set of fights if you’ve done any leveling. Attack, heal when needed, and keep going until the pool finally runs out of fish.

Auron then rejoins the festivities by fighting a FiendDragon-type fiend used for Auron's solo battle immediately after the Luca tournament final. alone. One hit should do it. Tidus, Wakka, and Auron follow that with a stronger FiendLarge flying fiend whose powerful physical attacks are much safer after Wakka inflicts Darkness; the Luca version also counters attacks.. Have Wakka use SkillPhysical attack that attempts to inflict Darkness for three turns. and reapply it when Darkness wears off; Auron’s SkillPhysical attack that attempts to halve the target's Strength. reduces the damage when the bird does connect. The FiendLarge flying fiend whose powerful physical attacks are much safer after Wakka inflicts Darkness; the Luca version also counters attacks. has 1,800 HP and counters attacks, so keeping it blinded makes the fight much safer.

Apparently Yuna has a thing for guys with really big Battle SystemA summoned ally that replaces the active party until it is dismissed, defeated, or wins the battle.. I’m not sure what that means. ahem Boy, doesn’t Auron have a twisted sense of humor. (No, that wasn’t a question.) Anywho…

After Auron’s monologue, follow him and the red arrows back toward the stadium shops. Stock up if you want, and save. Head south into town proper, follow the path east, then go north into the Luca Theater. Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. is on the floor of the reception area, somewhat camouflaged against the carpet.

Follow the red arrows around the statue and up the stairs. When Yuna calls to Tidus, go say “hi” to her. Gotta love that theme-with-variations spin on Ellone’s theme. When you have control again, save your game and head straight ahead along the path to the Highroad.
