Four earlier Primers have replacement copies scattered around Bikanel, but the replacements appear only if you missed the originals. Check beside the Oasis for Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. and near Wakka’s shelter for Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. if either one is missing from your Key Items.
Take the first path east to find Kimahri. Look behind the large ruin near him for the replacement Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. if you missed it on the S.S. Winno. Head back to the fork, follow the other path, and find Rikku. Open the two chests outside her enclosure for two ItemRestores 100 MP to one character. and eight ItemRestores 1,000 HP to the active party and removes Poison, Silence, and Petrification., then save again.
These enemies can be interesting to fight, and some are a little more tricky than others. Remember, any character who participates gets AP. This is true even if all they do is sit there quietly while you press Triangle to skip their turn.
A FiendLarge Bikanel fiend with 45,000 HP; percentage damage and Poison work well, and a swallowed character misses AP if the worm dies before returning them. has 45,000 HP, but Poison and percentage-based damage make that number much less alarming. Use Bio, Blk MagicDeals Gravity damage equal to one quarter of each enemy's current HP., or the ItemUse item that deals Gravity damage equal to half of each enemy's current HP. you can steal from it, then finish with Ice or Water. Darkness and Sleep work, but Slow does not. After the worm has been targeted ten times, it Swallows one character; five more target actions make it spit the character back out. Try not to kill the worm while somebody is still inside, or that character will miss the AP. Earthquake can do some pretty serious damage, so don’t take all afternoon.
FiendLarge flying Bikanel fiend vulnerable to Poison, Darkness, Slow, and Armor Break; interrupt its glowing-wing preparation before Sonic Boom hits the party. responds well to Poison, Darkness, Slow, and SkillPhysical attack that attempts to reduce the target's Defense to zero and remove Armored protection.. When its wings begin to glow, hit it before Sonic Boom lands on the entire party. FiendBikanel fiend and name used by the desert Gatekeeper quest; distinct from the Thunder Plains Qactuar. are fast, evasive, and immune to Sleep; Overdrives, Rikku’s Use items, and other attacks that cannot miss are your best bets. Steal ItemUse item that grants Haste to one character for the battle. while you have the chance. If you get one close to death, Special AbilityThrows Gil at one enemy to deal damage based on the amount spent. can finish it at one damage per ten Gil, but that could become an expensive way to kill a cactus. :D
FiendVisible Bikanel plant fiend whose Seed Burst causes Confusion; Kimahri can Lancet Seed Cannon from it. are visible before the fight. Steal a ItemRemoves most standard status ailments from one character. (or the rarer Musk), then use Haste, SkillPhysical attack that attempts to reduce the target's Defense to zero and remove Armored protection., Sleep, and Fire. Enemy AbilityGrat attack that damages the active party and may inflict Confusion. causes Confusion, so armor protection helps. Kimahri can also Special AbilityKimahri ability that drains HP and MP and can teach him specific Ronso Rage techniques from compatible enemies. Ronso RageKimahri Overdrive learned by using Lancet on a Ragora in Kilika Woods. from one if, somehow, he escaped Kilika without learning the move the game teaches him there.
Sanubia Desert - East
Follow Rikku around the tent and toward Home, but don’t be afraid to explore. At the first fork, take the path down and left for four ItemRestores 1,000 HP to one character.. The replacement Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. appears near the sign here if you missed Rin’s copy in the Thunder Plains. Return to the fork and continue north into Sanubia Desert - Central.
If an encounter includes a treasure chest, have Rikku Steal from the chest before you kill the other enemies. Bikanel’s battle chests contain an ItemRestores 100 MP to one character. or ItemRestores 9,999 HP to one character. and do not turn into the Mimics you’ll meet much later. They’re just sitting there full of stuff. It would be rude not to steal it.
Sanubia Desert - Central
This area is wide enough to hide a lot of treasure. From the entrance, head toward the round debris in the middle for four ItemRestores 1,000 HP to one character., then follow the western fence to the far-left chest for two ItemRestores 2,000 HP to every active party member.. Work east along the rubble to find the partly hidden chest with two ItemRestores 9,999 HP to one character.. Save at the sign and open the Al Bhed first aid kit behind it for eight ItemRestores 1,000 HP to the active party and removes Poison, Silence, and Petrification..
The left route from the Field SystemField sphere used to save and restore the party's HP and MP; later spheres also connect to the airship. leads into the ruins with the stronger fiends. Follow the western wall for an ItemFully restores one character's HP and MP., then search the large U-shaped structure for a Sphere GridSphere used to open a Lv. 2 locked node on the Sphere Grid. and 10,000 Gil. The ruined structure farther northeast contains Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language.. The rubble also carries the second half of the words you saw back in Kilika, in case you were waiting breathlessly for that plot thread.
Return to the main area and save if you need to. Take the northeastern route past the sign toward Home and pick up Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. on the ground before the exit. Both XVII and XVIII are in Sanubia Desert - Central; you do not enter West until you pass this second Primer.
Sanubia Desert - West
The stone with a FiendBikanel fiend and name used by the desert Gatekeeper quest; distinct from the Thunder Plains Qactuar. painted on it off to the right is the start of the Cactuar Gatekeepers sidequest. You can safely ignore it for now; the quest cannot be completed until you have full control of the airship.
Follow the left wall north until the mini-map shows a small alcove. Open the chest at its entrance for eight ItemRestores 1,000 HP to one character., then step into the unguarded sand pit for the Key ItemCelestial token used by Rikku's Godhand in the North American English PS2 release and by Wakka's World Champion under the alternate planet-name set., part of Rikku’s Godhand. On releases using the alternate planet-name set, this is called the Key ItemCelestial token used by Lulu's Onion Knight in the North American English PS2 release and by Rikku's Godhand under the alternate planet-name set..
Continue northeast to the first two FiendVisible Bikanel plant fiend whose Seed Burst causes Confusion; Kimahri can Lancet Seed Cannon from it. pits. One guards three ItemFully restores the active party's HP and MP. and the next guards two Sphere GridMoves one character to any node that any character has activated.. Farther west, the southern chest in the large side area holds three ItemRestores 2,000 HP to every active party member. and the northern chest holds two ItemRestores 9,999 HP to one character..
Follow the red arrow north when you’re ready. The FiendVisible Bikanel plant fiend whose Seed Burst causes Confusion; Kimahri can Lancet Seed Cannon from it. blocking the narrow opening is mandatory, so take it down and watch the cutscenes. It looks like a point of no return, but it isn’t quite one: you can still walk back into the desert before advancing through Home. It is the last sensible time to finish this first-visit cleanup, though.
If Lulu isn’t too far away from Blk MagicDeals heavy Lightning-elemental magic damage to one enemy., this is a good place to finish the trip. If Tidus and Rikku have reached their Lv. 3 locks, don’t backtrack along the Character GrowthFFX character-development board where Sphere Levels move a character and spheres activate reached nodes. just to spend levels; let them accumulate Character GrowthMovement resource earned through AP and spent to travel between nodes on the Sphere Grid. for now. Sphere GridSphere used to open a Lv. 3 locked node on the Sphere Grid. are still a while away.
Defending Home
Welcome to Home. Learn something interesting about Rikku there? She’s Cid’s daughter. Wait a second… wasn’t some guy named Cid Yuna’s uncle? Hmm. Does that make Yuna and Rikku cousins?!?
Before you enter the dome, pick up Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. along the wall to the left, examine Keyakku’s body for two ItemRestores 1,000 HP to one character., and save. You can still go back outside and level up if you want. LOL.
The Bombs inside are extremely sensitive to Blizzard magic. :) The FiendHard-hitting horned fiend on the Mi'ihen Highroad that drops early Ability Spheres and teaches Kimahri Fire Breath through Lancet. hit hard, so kill the FiendGuado support enemy that protects allies, carries restorative items, and uses those items to counter damage unless its inventory is stolen. first and use SkillPhysical attack that attempts to inflict Darkness for three turns. if needed. FiendFlying eye fiend encountered around Lake Macalania, Home, and the Airship; it is weak to Fire and belongs to the Macalania Monster Arena group. can cause Confusion; don’t leave Lulu confused for a full round, or she may attack you with magic. Kimahri can Special AbilityKimahri ability that drains HP and MP and can teach him specific Ronso Rage techniques from compatible enemies. Ronso RageKimahri Overdrive learned from Bomb that deals damage based on three times his maximum HP, then removes him from the battle; he returns afterward with 1 HP. from a Bomb if he hasn’t already learned it.
Move toward the party for the forced battle against a FiendGuado support enemy that protects allies, carries restorative items, and uses those items to counter damage unless its inventory is stolen. and three Bombs, then follow Rikku through the eastern door. After the next battle, follow everyone down the stairs. Open the chest concealed by the smoke at the bottom for four ItemRestores 1,000 HP to the active party and removes Poison, Silence, and Petrification., then turn around, climb back up, and enter the door on the left.

- Password chest: Choose Sorry at bottom-center, Wait at middle-right, and Pardon at center. The reward is a Sphere GridMoves one character to the node currently occupied by another character.. A wrong answer starts another battle.
Return downstairs and follow the corridor to the three-way fork. The center path is a dead end with six ItemRestores 1,000 HP to the active party and removes Poison, Silence, and Petrification.. Take the right-hand path next, pick up Key ItemOne of 26 volumes that progressively translates the Al Bhed language. at the end of the hall, and enter the room beside it.

The left-hand math chest awards a Sphere GridActivates any Special ability node that another character has already activated.. Do the four equations shown on your screen in this order: addition, subtraction, multiplication, addition. My playthrough showed 4 + 1, 7 - 1, 3 × 1, and 2 + 1, which produced 5633, but the displayed numbers can vary, so don’t just blindly use my answer without checking your game. A calculator is allowed. I won’t tell Yevon.
The Summoners’ Sanctum
Return to the fork and use the Field SystemField sphere used to save and restore the party's HP and MP; later spheres also connect to the airship. at the end of the left path. Do not go through the nearby door until you have Primers XIX, XX, and XXI; this is the permanent cutoff.
When you’re ready, go through and approach the party. Defeat the FiendGuado support enemy that protects allies, carries restorative items, and uses those items to counter damage unless its inventory is stolen. and two FiendLarge Macalania Woods fiend that uses several elements and teaches Kimahri Aqua Breath through Lancet., then descend to the lowest level. Open the chest in the upper-right area for a Sphere GridSphere used to open a Lv. 2 locked node on the Sphere Grid. and search behind the stairs along the lower-left wall for a Sphere GridSphere used to open a Lv. 4 locked node on the Sphere Grid. (your first one, and the last for quite a while).
Go through the door on the right. After some cutscenes you should probably watch, because these are kind of important, open the chest in the far-left corner for 10,000 Gil. Head through the last door at the lower right, down the walkway, and up the stairs onto the airship.
