Jewels

All about Jewels

In FF9, Jewels serve a few different purposes. First, specific Jewels allow appropriate characters to learn various Summons. Additionally the power of certain Summons is proportional to the quantity of a specific type of Jewel you keep in your inventory. The most important thing to keep in mind is this - never sell your Jewels unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing - and how it will impact your game in the future.

Don't Miss: Some Jewels are easy to synth later while others are extremely rare. Moonstones in particular cannot be synthesized, and Diamond is the one Gimme Cat tries to con out of you. Friendly monster? More like Fiendly monster.

Ore

Associated Eidolon: Odin

Learn: Nothing directly. Ore is used for synthesis, Friendly Monsters, and Odin's summon math.
Steal From: Many enemies throughout the game. This one is common enough that listing every source is mostly noise.
Get More: Enemy drops, many steals, Chocobo Hot and Cold point exchange, Fossil Roo excavation, and Eiko's Jewel spell
Special Notes: Keep a healthy stockpile. Ore heals in battle for 4x your current Ore count, helps synth several Jewels, feeds early Friendly Monsters, increases Zantetsuken's success rate, and lowers Odin's Sword damage.

Garnet

Associated Eidolon: Bahamut

Learn: Bahamut and Healer
Steal From: Abadon, Chimera
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Remedy in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. You can also get a large batch from the Outer Island Chocograph and a Disc 3 gift from Beatrix.
Special Notes: Bahamut's Mega Flare gets stronger as your Garnet stock rises. Also: yes, this is annoying to read in a game where Dagger's real name is also Garnet.

Amethyst

Associated Eidolon: Atomos

Learn: Atomos and Demi
Steal From: Zidane (Mirror)
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Annoyntment in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Outer Island and Forgotten Island Chocograph treasures also hand over big piles.
Special Notes: Atomos' damage scales with your Amethyst count.

Aquamarine

Associated Eidolon: Leviathan

Learn: Leviathan and HP+10%
Steal From: n/a
Get More: Use Ore on the shrine in Daguerreo, find one at the Iifa Tree, and dig up 10 with a Dead Pepper where Shimmering Island used to be on Disc 4
Special Notes: Leviathan's Tsunami gets stronger as your Aquamarine stock rises.

Diamond

Associated Eidolon: Carbuncle variant

Learn: Body Temp and Distract
Steal From: n/a
Get More: Buy from Stiltzkin in Bran Bal, find at Conde Petie, find in the Sea at Dusk Chocograph treasure, and receive one from Friendly Garuda
Special Notes: Equipping Diamond changes Carbuncle to Diamond Light, which grants Protect and Vanish. Do not give one to Gimme Cat unless you enjoy being hosed.

Emerald

Associated Eidolon: Carbuncle variant

Learn: Haste, MP+10%, and White Draw
Steal From: n/a
Get More: Buy from Stiltzkin in Oeilvert, receive one from the High Priest in Cleyra while controlling Freya, and receive one from Friendly Nymph
Special Notes: Equipping Emerald changes Carbuncle to Emerald Light, which grants Protect and Haste. Friendly Jabberwock wants an Emerald, so do not spend your last one casually.

Moonstone

Associated Eidolon: Carbuncle variant

Learn: Beast Killer and Shell
Steal From: n/a
Get More: Get one from the Conde Petie Mountain Path colored-stone puzzle, earn one from Queen Brahne if you impress all 100 nobles and the Queen, buy one from Stiltzkin in Alexandria on Disc 4, and receive one from Friendly Jabberwock
Special Notes: Moonstones cannot be synthesized. Equipping one changes Carbuncle to Pearl Light, which grants Protect and Shell. Friendly Feather Circle wants a Moonstone, so keep one ready.

Ruby

Associated Eidolon: Carbuncle

Learn: Carbuncle and Reflect
Steal From: n/a
Get More: Find one at the Iifa Tree and buy one from Stiltzkin in Alexandria on Disc 4
Special Notes: Ruby teaches Carbuncle, but unlike most of the other Jewels, it does not augment an Eidolon's attack power.

Peridot

Associated Eidolon: Ramuh

Learn: Ramuh and Thundara
Steal From: Stroper, Quina (Mirror), Vivi (Mirror)
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Soft in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. You also receive one from Old Man Ramuh in Pinnacle Rocks, and Chocograph treasures can supply larger batches.
Special Notes: Ramuh's Judgment Bolt gets stronger as your Peridot stock rises.

Sapphire

Associated Eidolon: Fenrir

Learn: Fenrir and High Tide
Steal From: Eiko (Mirror)
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Antidote in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Eiko also joins with one, and Chocograph treasures can provide larger batches.
Special Notes: Fenrir's attack power rises with your Sapphire stock.

Opal

Associated Eidolon: Shiva

Learn: Shiva and Blizzara
Steal From: Mover, Freya (Mirror)
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Potion in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Doctor Tot gives one in Alexandria on Disc 3, and Chocograph treasures can provide larger batches.
Special Notes: Shiva's Diamond Dust gets stronger as your Opal stock rises.

Topaz

Associated Eidolon: Ifrit

Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Eye Drops in Daguerreo, Hades' synth shop, or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Doctor Tot gives one in Alexandria on Disc 3, and you can get large batches from Cold Lagoon and the Quan's Dwelling Dead Pepper bubble.
Special Notes: Ifrit's Flames of Hell gets stronger as your Topaz stock rises.

Lapis Lazuli

Associated Eidolon: Ark

Learn: Ability Up and Accuracy+
Steal From: Steiner (Mirror), Dagger (Mirror)
Get More: Synthesize from Ore and Dead Pepper at Hades' synth shop or Black Mage Village on Disc 4. You can also get 41 from the Lost Continent crack and one from Friendly Feather Circle.
Special Notes: Ark's Eternal Darkness gets stronger as your Lapis Lazuli stock rises. Friendly Garuda wants one, so keep at least one handy if you are working the Friendly Monster chain.
